It was important to wrap up warm on a night like this, with snow on the ground and a cold wind blowing. Dee and Ryo were both bundled up in warm winter coats, scarves wrapped around their necks and covering their mouths and noses, woollen hats pulled down over their ears, hands and feet protected by fur-lined gloves and boots.
Dee had suggested that one of them could stay home in the warm; it wasn’t like both of them had to brave the practically sub-zero conditions, but Ryo had shrugged, insisting that despite the cold it was a beautiful night and he felt like taking a walk. Dee could stay home if he wanted.
Like that was gonna happen! There could be urban foxes out there, scavenging for food, maybe even a racoon or two drawn into the city hoping for an easy meal and a warm place to shelter.
He glanced down at the small dog trotting along between him and his lover, wrapped up in his own fur-lined coat, complete with hood, four little paws protected from the icy ground by two pairs of tiny boots, tail wagging eagerly as he scampered ahead a bit to sniff at something. At least someone was enjoying the outing. Dee went back to scanning the empty street for signs of danger, ready to snatch Dick up and out of reach; even New York’s rats could be a threat to a city-bred miniature dachshund. Danger lurked everywhere; he wasn’t taking any chances.
