This was definitely not the weather for taking a swim. Then again, it wasn’t like Ryo had planned to. Some days just sucked from start to finish and it already looked like this would be one of them.

Recent heavy rains had led to flooding in some areas of the city, which was to be expected since much of New York was either on an island or bordered by a river. Under normal circumstances the building site he’d been chasing a suspect through might have been a bit muddy, puddles of rainwater here and there, but nothing worse than that. Today was a different matter entirely.

There was plenty of mud, and plenty of puddles too; the ground was awash to the point that work had been halted the week before. Trying to lay foundations in such sodden ground was an exercise in futility. The heavy construction equipment was bogged down and even if it hadn’t been, any hole that was dug either collapsed or immediately filled up with water.

One large pit must have already been dug before the weather had forced the company to down tools, and that was where Ryo was currently taking his unscheduled swim. One minute he’d been running through ankle-deep water, hoping to cut the fugitive off, and the next there’d been no ground beneath his feet and he’d plunged over his head in a seemingly bottomless lake. When he floundered back to the surface he couldn’t even tell where the edge of the hole was; all he could do was try to swim back the way he’d come and hope he could get back onto something resembling solid ground.

Dragging himself out of the deep water into the ankle-deep puddle that had been his downfall, he scrambled to his feet and waded slowly and cautiously to a stretch of mud and gravel that passed for dry land, fervently wishing he’d stayed in bed.

Dee appeared, shoving his handcuffed prisoner in front of him. His eyebrows shot up as he stared at Ryo, dripping disconsolately and smeared with mud.

“What the hell happened to you?”

Grimacing, Ryo made a futile attempt to wring out his jacket. He wasn’t sure why he bothered.

“I didn’t know they’d already put in a swimming pool.”

“Huh?”

“I think it’s supposed to be one of the foundation holes. I was in it before I knew it was there.”

The End
