It was late and Dee was just arriving home the first time he heard it, an unearthly banshee wailing coming from his landlord’s apartment. It sounded like someone was being murdered so he rapped on the door.
“Hey, Harry, you okay in there?”
There was a scuffling sound, the wailing got louder, and Dee was about to kick the door in when it opened and Harry appeared, looking frazzled. Before he could say a word, Dee got right to the point.
“What the fuck’s makin’ that noise?”
“Suki,” Harry said with a long-suffering sigh. “She was my mom’s, and now I’m stuck with her. Seems neither one of us is happy about it.”
Suki turned out to be a cat, a seal point Siamese to be exact. When Dee went inside to meet the cause of the commotion she was halfway up the curtains, yowling.
Harry unhooked her, set her on the floor, and back up the curtain she went.
“Why’s she doin’ that? She gets stuck every time!”
“She just wants some attention.” Dee lifted the cat down, cradling her in his arms.
Suki gazed mournfully up at him, cross-eyed. “Waaah.”
Harry smiled sadly. “Guess she’s missing mom too.”
