JJ had always been forward. The youngest of five children, and always small for his age, he’d learned early the only way to be heard was to speak up. If he wanted something, first he had to get someone’s attention.
It had made him confident and outspoken, the kind of man who went after what he wanted, which wasn’t always a good thing. Some people found him annoying, but he was good-natured, friendly, and generally cheerful so most were willing to overlook his pushiness. Nobody was perfect.
Still, his outgoing nature did have a habit of backfiring on him. Take Dee for instance. For JJ it had been love at first sight and he’d immediately set about winning the man of his dreams, but the harder he tried to impress his tall, black-haired fellow cadet, the more irritated Dee became, to the point where he was actively trying to avoid JJ. Unfortunately, instead of being put off, JJ simply tried harder, jumping on Dee and kissing him, trying to wear down his resistance.
Needless to say, it hadn’t worked at the academy, and it proved no more effective years later when JJ got himself assigned to the same precinct as Dee. It was several years before JJ finally admitted defeat and turned his attention elsewhere.
Drake was Dee’s complete opposite, unobtrusive, pessimistic, and given to bouts of gloom. He wasn’t drop dead gorgeous like Dee but he was cute, and a loyal, caring friend.
He was also supposedly straight, but Drake’s love life was such a train wreck JJ came to the conclusion his partner would be much better off with him than any of the women he’d dated.
That decided, in his typical forward fashion, he kissed Drake right on the lips.
The rest, as they say, is history.
