“Keep on the way you’re goin’ and you’ll come to no good,” Dee told Bikky, staring the ten-year-old down.
“Dee’s right, Bikky. You have a chance now to really make something of yourself if you’d only try. You could follow any path you choose, but the one you’re on right now will only lead to a life of crime. Is that what you want, to wind up in jail, or worse?”
“No…” What Bikky wanted was to play basketball, but old habits were hard to break and anyway, what was the big deal? What he’d done wasn’t anything really bad, just a bit of fun.
“So quit with the petty thievery if you don’t want to be labelled a common criminal,” Dee advised. “That stuff stays with ya for life.”
“Common?” Bikky scowled. “You take that back! I’m not a common anything!” He pulled himself up to his full four foot two. “It’s not like I was picking pockets or stealing candy. How may other kids d’you know could swipe the wheels off thirty bikes in one day?”
Dee opened his mouth then closed it again, shrugging. “Ya got me there; that was pretty impressive.”
“Don’t encourage him!” Ryo snapped.
