“Instant coffee powder?” Dee asked incredulously. “You actually drink that stuff?”
Ryo laughed. “I have been known to when there wasn’t anything better available; it still beats what’s usually on the hotplate at the precinct.”
Dee grimaced in disgust. “You’ve got a point there, squad room coffee is vile; no amount of sugar can make it drinkable. I sometimes wonder if anyone’s ever cleaned the machine or if they just make a fresh brew on top of the dregs of the last lot. Wouldn’t surprise me if they did.”
“I always wonder why anyone bothers making coffee in the precinct when there’s a coffee shop right across the street. If you take a thermos in they’ll fill it for you.”
“You buy the coffee? I always thought you brought it from home.”
“Sometimes I do, but when it’s gone I rinse my flask out and get it refilled.”
“Huh. So why are ya buyin’ instant coffee? Emergency rations to keep in your desk in case you need caffeine when the coffee shop’s closed?”
“Not a bad idea, but actually it’s to make some more of that coffee cake you like so much.”
“That has instant coffee in it?”
“Where did you think the coffee flavor came from?” Ryo grinned at his lover, amused.
“Never really gave it any thought,” Dee admitted. “I mean, it’s coffee cake so I figured there was coffee in it, but I guess I assumed you used coffee flavoring or somethin’…” He trailed off lamely.
“I do.” Ryo held up the jar of instant coffee. “It just happens to come in a jar that looks exactly like this one.”
“Right, I get it, I’m a dumbass; no need to rub it in,” Dee grumbled; then he brightened. “You’re gonna make coffee cake?”
“That’s the plan.”
“Yay!”
