All the work they’d done on the case, all the investigating, gathering evidence, following leads, interviewing witnesses and suspects… Hell, all the cramming they’d done over the last few days when they could’ve been working their open cases… All of it had just gone down the drain, allowing a killer to get off scot-free. It was unbelievable!

The bastard had murdered a young couple in their own home when they’d arrived back early from a night out and caught him mid-burglary. Dee and Ryo had no doubt he was guilty, they even had a witness, the elderly woman living next door, who’d seen the thief casing the house the night before the murder. She’d called the police at the time to report suspicious activity, and had identified the suspect in a line-up following the murders. A good chunk of the prosecution’s case rested on her testimony, but before she had a chance to testify she’d been found dead.

Nobody could prove the defendant had arranged her murder, but the rest of the evidence presented at his trial hadn’t been enough to prove he was guilty of the original robbery/double homicide. Now he was free to kill again. Justice had failed.

The End
