When Jack up and left, without any kind of warning or even so much as a note, it hurt. No surprise there; being abandoned by the one who’d given his life meaning again after Lisa’s death had been bound to hurt, but at the same time Ianto couldn’t blame Jack for walking out on them. They’d betrayed him, Ianto for the second time, and then he’d died horribly saving the world and stayed dead for several days. Even when he’d revived he’d looked far from well. Getting away from everything might be just what he needed.

From what little Ianto had been able to learn of Jack’s disappearance, the strange noise and the unexplained wind Gwen had told them about, it seemed safe to assume the Doctor had happened by, either by chance or because Jack had contacted him. The hand in its jar was gone from its place in Jack’s office, which would appear to confirm Ianto’s suspicions. Maybe a trip with the Time Lord would do Jack good, give him a chance to recover physically as well as letting the emotional wounds from their betrayal heal.

Ianto had read Torchwood One’s files on the Doctor, knew he could travel in time as well as space in that little police box of his that was supposed to be bigger on the inside. Jack could travel with his friend for as long as he liked and still be back tomorrow if he chose.

Only he didn’t return the following day, or the day after that, and the days soon stretched into a week.

The rest of the team spent a lot of time fretting about what could have happened to their leader, and arguing over who was in charge with Jack gone. Ianto could have told them his suspicions, and maybe it was petty of him not to, but he knew if he did they’d only start asking him an endless stream of questions, most of which he probably didn’t have answers to. Quite honestly he already had more than enough to do, all his regular tasks, plus most of Jack’s paperwork. Someone had to keep everything running smoothly, and having been Jack’s de facto assistant for so long, he was the only one who could. On top of all that, being one man down meant he was needed in the field as well; he didn’t have the time to answer pointless questions.

So they jogged along well enough despite the frequent squabbles between Gwen and Owen, who both seemed to think they should be in charge while somehow managing to overlook the fact that Ianto had taken over running things, at least around the Hub. He made sure they all got paid, sent the requisite paperwork where it needed to go, and flatly refused to mope over the disappearance of his lover. It wouldn’t make him feel any better, so what was the point?

Jack would return, or he wouldn’t; in the meantime, they had a job to do.
