Being a cop was all about solving mysteries, the main questions being how was the crime committed, who did it, and why? There were times when the reason for a crime was the hardest of the three to pin down; some had no obvious motive and even when those responsible were caught, the reasons still didn’t become clear. Maybe the guilty parties weren’t entirely sure themselves.

Like the guy who stole the licence plates off ninety-seven cars in his neighbourhood. When asked why, he said he was bored, they were right there, and he had a screwdriver in his pocket, so why not? Why he was carrying a screwdriver with him on his late night walks was also unclear, but when he was caught, all the licence plates were right there in his living room, carefully sorted and arranged alphabetically.

Then there was the woman who was arrested for taking off all her clothes on her way to work one day and standing at the bus stop, naked. Sitting in the interview room, she told the police she’d done it on a whim, just to see if anyone would notice.

There were dozens of such stories circulating of people committing relatively minor crimes for no reason other than that it seemed like a good idea at the time. It didn’t surprise Dee all that much; he’d long believed that at least a quarter of New York’s population weren’t dealing with a full deck, and the same was probably true everywhere else. Such eccentric behaviour was more entertaining that harmful.

But then there were the other crimes, the violent ones, shootings and stabbings, and it bothered him how little it took to make some people snap. The biggest mystery of all was why the government did nothing to prevent such tragedies.

The End
