After years on the force, Dee’s faith in the almighty has become somewhat battered and shaky. It’s hard to believe in God when you see every day the worst things people can do to themselves and each other.

Back when he was growing up in the orphanage, he’d believed almost without question, because Mother said God was real and she never lied about anything. She told him God watched over everyone, always knew who’d been bad or good, which had made Dee imagine God as looking a lot like Santa. That had caused some confusion when he was four or five, but even if he’d got the two a bit mixed up he’d never had any serious doubts. Not until Arnon was killed.

He’s tried to hold onto his faith, but he’s not a child anymore, sheltered from the horrors of the word he lives in. Every day, the news is full of wars and atrocities, droughts and famines; it’s hard to believe in the existence of the benevolent creator Mother taught him about. If he’s real then why does he allow such terrible things to happen? Dee still believes, but he no longer expects God to fix everything.

Maybe that was an unrealistic expectation in the first place. There are billions of people in the world now; how can any one being, no matter how powerful and all seeing, be expected to watch over every single one, every minute of every day? Even Santa restricted himself to just keeping an eye on the kids.

These days much of Dee’s faith resides elsewhere, in his own abilities and those of the people he works with, especially his partner. They and people like them are the ones dealing with the bad stuff. Maybe that’s why God made them who they are.
