Sometimes Dee envies his partner; Ryo is an expert marksman, a crack shot with any make of handgun or rifle. Maybe he’s not quite up to JJ’s standards, at least not according to JJ himself, but if there’s a difference in their skill levels Dee sure as hell can’t see it. The squad’s last tournament, Ryo finished two points ahead of JJ, who claimed he was having an off day because of a sore wrist. Hah! Dee called that sour grapes. The little guy was sore alright; a sore goddamned loser!
Dee’s no slouch with a gun himself of course; he’s a detective in the NYPD and he wouldn’t be allowed out on the streets with a gun if he didn’t know how to use it, but he can’t match Ryo’s level of expertise, not even close. For one thing, Dee is strictly a handgun guy; he can handle both revolver and automatic, although he’s best with familiar makes and models. He’s used a rifle on the firing range a few times, but it’s not something he’s trained for. Being a marksman is a whole different discipline, and as for being a police sniper… He knows he doesn’t have the patience that requires, never mind the rock steady hands.
Ryo has both, in spades; he’s got the kind of single-minded focus whereby he can crouch in place, eye to the scope of his sniper rifle, and never so much as twitch while he waits for a clear shot. Dee admires that; it’s an impressive skill, being able to tune out everything from traffic, and weather, to personal discomfort no matter how long it takes. He’d either get restless and fidgety or fall asleep.
It’s okay though; Dee has his own areas of expertise. Complementary skills make for a great partnership.
