Dee watched as Ryo demonstrated a series of warm-up exercises designed for limbering up in preparation for a more vigorous workout routine. This was to be his first martial arts lessons; his partner had said they’d be starting with some basic judo, as Dee would need to learn how to fall safely before they got into anything more complicated.
He knew he should be paying more attention to what Ryo was telling him, but his mouth had gone dry watching his partner bend and stretch. Dee had already known that Ryo was stronger than he looked; his slender body was deceptive, all lean, toned muscle with little excess weight, but until now he’d never truly appreciated just how flexible his partner was.
“You’re so bendy!” he exclaimed before he could stop himself.
“What?” Ryo straightened up, giving him a wary look.
“I just… those exercises you were doin’ just now… I’m not sure I can bend like that. You make it look easy, but what if I just… can’t? And these are just the warm-up exercises!”
Thankfully Ryo accepted Dee’s hurriedly contrived explanation; he’d have to be more careful what he blurted out in future or these lessons might be over before they really got started.
“You might not be able to bend and stretch as far as I can at first, but that’s all part of learning. The more you work at it the more flexible you’ll become. It’s like any form of exercise; it takes practice. I’ve been doing this practically all my life, but most of it’s going to be new to you. Just take it step by step.”
“Okay, step by step, I can do that.”
“Good, let’s get started then; just copy what I do.”
Dee nodded. “Lead on.” He just needed to avoid drooling.
The End
