Ryo and Dee were in the kitchen, discussing their current case while making dinner.
“There’s no doubt in my mind it was the husband did it,” Dee said. “There was no break-in. He’s a control freak, probably messed her up every time she stepped outta line. Lost his temper this time and hit her harder than he thought.”
Ryo nodded. “I was thinking the same thing; the problem’s gonna be finding the proof. The guy’s a bastard, but he’s smart, not to mention a respected member of the community.”
“Yeah. If we could just persuade one of his neighbours to come forward… someone must’ve heard something.”
“I know.” Ryo gave a frustrated sigh. “The walls of his building are thicker than the ones here, but still… That poor woman was covered in cuts and bruises, not all of them fresh. Surely his neighbours must have suspected something.”
“It’d be hard for her to hide her injuries, unless she usually stays home until she’s healed.”
“Even so, you’d think it would arouse suspicion if nobody saw her for days, even weeks at a time. Judging by the healed injuries, she would’ve been out of circulation a lot. It doesn’t take a detective to figure out the guy’s an eggbeater.”
Dee, who was preparing a salad to go with the omelettes Ryo was making, burst out laughing.
Ryo shot his lover a disapproving look. “Domestic abuse is hardly a laughing matter, Dee!”
“I know, sorry,” Dee gasped. “It’s just, you called Thorpe an eggbeater!”
“What? No I didn’t!”
“Yeah you did,” Dee snickered.
Ryo flushed. “I meant wife beater!”
“Just as long as you get it right when we arrest him,” Dee teased then turned serious. “Cause whatever it takes we’re gonna nail this abusive bastard. He’s not gettin’ away with murder.”
