“Dee, be careful now, that wall doesn’t look very stable,” Mother warned the young tearaway.

The boy snorted. Penguin made a fuss about the silliest things and it wasn’t like he’d never done this before. He walked along the top of this wall every chance he got, ducking under low branches and jumping the gap where the small gate used to be, before it fell off its hinges. After years of practice he could practically do it with his eyes closed. Sometimes Penguin treated him like he was still a little kid, but he was almost ten now and he wasn’t scared of anything.

“It’s fine. Watch this!”

Maybe he shouldn’t have started showing off but he’d wanted to prove something, show Penguin how good he was at balancing, that there was nothing for her to worry about. Usually he only went as far as the second gateway, the bigger one, because it was a bit wide for him to jump from one twelve-inch square gatepost to the other; the gap had to be nearly five feet, but this time he was sure he could make it if he just ran the last few steps… It couldn’t be much harder than the small gateway; he’d seen some of the bigger boys do it.

He never got to try it himself because just before he reached the gatepost he was going to jump from, one of the bricks beneath his foot suddenly crumbled away and he tumbled off the wall into the bushes and brambles on the other side.

Scrambling out scratched and bleeding, tears in his eyes, he expected Mother to tell him off, but she didn’t; she just wrapped her arms around him.

“Maybe next time you’ll think before trying to be clever. Flirting with disaster never ends well.”

The End
