Bikky had a problem; Father’s Day was approaching and he didn’t have a real dad, not anymore, but he did have Ryo, who was his foster father. He wanted to show Ryo how grateful he was for being given such a great home; the detective had taken him in even though he didn’t have to, and Bikky was really happy living with him. The trouble was, he never called Ryo ‘Dad’ and wasn’t sure if he should, but nobody sold Father’s Day cards for foster fathers, not that he could find.
“What should I do?” he asked Carol. She was pretty much the best friend he had, plus she was three years older and very smart; if there was anyone other than Ryo he could count on for good advice, it was her.
“Ryo might not be your real dad, but he’s still your dad in every way that counts,” Carol said. “He looks after you, cooks for you, buys you everything you need. He tucks you in at night, and helps you with your homework.”
“I guess,” Bikky agreed; Ryo did all of that and more.
“Then it’s okay to get him whatever card you like.”
“Even if it says ‘To My Dad’ when he told me to call him Ryo?”
“It wouldn’t mean you’d stopped loving your real dad, Bikky, I know you still miss him, but it’s okay to have more than one dad.”
“And just because I don’t call Ryo ‘Dad’ doesn’t mean he isn’t.”
“Exactly.”
