Ryo’s birthday was rapidly approaching, but he wasn’t looking forward to it as much as he usually did. He knew it was silly, age was just a number, but forty… That was how old his mother had been when she’d died. She’d have been in her early sixties by now, his father a couple of years older. It was strange to think that in a few more years he would have lived longer than either of them. That must be the reason for his gloominess at the prospect of his birthday.
“So, just over a week and you’ll hit the big 4-0!” Dee said with a grin, settling opposite Ryo at the breakfast table. “What d’ya wanna do to celebrate?”
Elbow on the table, chin resting on the heel of one hand, Ryo picked up his toast and put it down again. “I don’t know, not sure I even feel like celebrating this year.”
“You okay, babe?”
“I’m fine, it’s just…”
“What?”
“Forty… It’s like overnight I’ll go from being young to middle-aged.”
Dee chuckled. “That’s the kinda talk I expect from me, not you. I’ll tell ya this; you don’t look middle-aged, not even close.”
“Thanks, Dee.”
“Anytime, babe.”
