“Bedtime, Biks. Turn off your game now.”
Bikky looked up from the videogame he was playing. “Aw, Ryo! C’mon, just a bit longer, please! It’s only half past nine!” At almost fifteen, Bikky was really starting to chafe at Ryo’s strict rules.
“It’s a school night. If you don’t get enough sleep tonight you won’t be able to concentrate in class tomorrow and I know you’ve got a math test. You’ll be kicking yourself if you flunk it because you were too tired.”
Grumbling, Bikky turned off his game and got to his feet. He hated when Ryo used logic on him because he knew his foster father was right. The math test was important; if he failed it he’d have to take an extra class after school, going over everything he’d already learned, and then take the test again. It would also mean missing basketball practice and being sidelined for games until he passed the stupid test. That still didn’t mean he had to be happy about any of it though. He was a teenager; he was entitled to be moody.
“I’m not a baby! My friends get to stay up until ten, or even ten-thirty!”
“Your friends don’t live here. You get to stay up later on Friday and Saturday, but it’s bed at nine-thirty on school nights.”
“Fine, I’m going.” Bikky slouched towards his bedroom.
“Goodnight.”
“Whatever.”
“Alone at last. Y’know he’ll thank you in the end.”
“Maybe.” Ryo smiled wryly at Dee.
“Just wait until he has kids of his own. Then he’ll understand what he put you through all these years.”
“He’s a teen, Dee; we’ve been there, we know what it’s like. Bet you were just as bad when you were his age.”
“Never!” Dee grinned. “I was way worse!”
“I can believe that!”
