A/N: This one’s a triple drabble.
Dee took a swig of coffee and pulled a face. “Ugh! Why does the coffee here always taste like tar?”
Ryo had been about to pour himself a mug but Dee’s words changed his mind and he put the coffee pot down again. “If it tastes that bad, why are you still drinking it?”
“I need the caffeine. Didn’t get to bed until the early hours, Mother had a plumbing emergency so I was over at the orphanage half the night dealing with a burst pipe. I think I might’ve got two hours’ sleep.” Dee rubbed his eyes tiredly with the heel of his hand. “Without coffee I’ll fall asleep at my desk.”
“You do that anyway,” Ryo pointed out.
Dee threw his partner a dirty look and downed the rest of the bitter coffee, grimacing. Foul though it tasted, at least now he felt marginally more alert. Unfortunately, even the terrible coffee failed to keep him awake for long. A couple of hours into their shift, Dee was fast asleep, his head on his desk.
Ryo let his partner sleep as long as he could and got on with their paperwork, but they couldn’t stay at the precinct all day. Reluctantly, he shook Dee awake.
“Whuh?” Dee opened bleary eyes.
“Get your coat on; we have to go talk to a witness.”
Wearily Dee dragged himself to his feet, heading for the coffee machine, but Ryo stopped him.
“I wouldn’t risk it if I were you; that’s the same batch you sampled earlier.”
“I’ll pass then; as much as I need caffeine, I’m not a masochist.”
“We’ll stop off at a coffee shop on the way and pick up something drinkable.”
“My hero.” Dee trudged down the stairs behind Ryo, smiling faintly. “You’re too good to me.”
“I know.”
