Dee might not think it of himself, but Ryo knew he was a kind, caring man. He kept up an act, the tough cop, the devil-may-care rogue, by nature both a lover and a fighter, but he had a soft heart, especially when it came to kids.
He claimed to dislike them, called them rug rats and house apes, and he probably fooled most people, but not his partner; Ryo could see right through him. It didn’t surprise him in the least that when Dee should have been taking a sick day, instead of going straight home the way he’d been told to, he’d spent most of the day taking care of a little girl who’d become separated from her mother on the busy New York streets.
Ryo had only found out because the grateful mother had dropped by the station to thank Dee in person. As he hadn’t been there, Ryo had promised to pass on her message, stopping by Dee’s apartment to find him all but passed out on the floor. Such a hero.
Helping Dee up and putting him to bed was the least Ryo could do. Dee’s kindness gave Ryo one more reason to love him.
