A/N: This one’s a triple drabble.

Cops in general were a tough bunch, but those who worked homicide had to be particularly strong, and it wasn’t just physical strength that counted. To bear witness to all the ugliness of brutal deaths they needed strong stomachs, to deal with the horrors and the tragedy and the grieving loved ones they needed strong hearts, and to relentlessly hunt down those responsible they needed determination and an iron will. Not every cop was cut out to be a homicide detective.

Both Dee and Ryo had been witness to violent death long before they became cops, and working homicide had been their goal from the start of their careers in law enforcement. They had good reasons for choosing that path; Dee the deaths of Arnon and Jess, and Ryo the senseless murder of his parents.

They’d developed thick skins to cope with the work, but that’s not to say it never affected them. A lot of what they saw was upsetting, but they knew they couldn’t let that get in the way of them doing their jobs. Some days they needed a few strong drinks after work, and other days what they needed most was each other, to clear their minds and make them feel alive again.

Thick-skinned they might be, but that hadn’t made them hard-hearted. They felt for every victim, and for the families left behind, because when a cop stops caring it’s time to quit.

They could walk through gore-splattered murder scenes dispassionately, never betraying any sign of emotion, treating the victims with whatever respect circumstances allowed while doing whatever needed to be done. That was the job; to observe, to collect evidence and clues, and to put the pieces together so the killers could be prosecuted.

Only then could they afford to grieve for the dead.

The End
