For the most part, Ryo preferred to avoid using guns and violence, he’d rather talk someone down than shoot them. Unlike a lot of cops, he saw his automatic as a last resort rather than a first choice. It had led to detectives from other precincts thinking of him as a pacifist, and not in a complimentary way, so when he and Dee were teamed up with detectives from a neighbouring precinct to work on a crime that crossed the boundary between the two, they weren’t exactly given a warm welcome.
“You’re the one doesn’t like usin’ a gun, aren’t ya? Try not to get us all killed,” the lead detective, Johnson, growled.
Dee bristled, but Ryo rested his hand lightly on his partner’s arm, preventing him from jumping down the other detective’s throat, and calmly replied, “I’m perfectly capable of using my gun when I have to, I just don’t think it’s always necessary. There are other, often safer ways to bring in a suspect than at gunpoint.”
“Says you,” Johnson sneered.
Three days later, Johnson’s opinion of Detective Randy Maclean changed completely as he watched the 27th Precinct’s so-called pacifist take down an uncooperative suspect without firing a shot.
Smirking as he stood back and let his partner take care of things, Dee commented, “Karate’s way more effective than bullets when there’s a chance innocent bystanders might get hit, don’tcha think?”
“Oh yeah!” Johnson replied, grinning.
“Just because he dislikes violence doesn’t mean he’s not good at it.”
