Maybe Dee shouldn’t have been snooping, but he was both bored and curious, and it wasn’t like it was really hidden or anything, so surely it couldn’t be something private…

He’d arrived early at Ryo’s apartment to find a note on the door saying to let himself in; Ryo had gone to the store and would be back in a little while. Doing as he was told, Dee had used his key and gone inside, but as the minutes ticked by he’d started to poke about a bit. He never missed an opportunity to find out more about his lover.

The sheet of paper was lying out in the open on Ryo’s coffee table. Dee picked it up and frowned at it, turning it this way and that, but couldn’t make any sense out of the spidery writing. He was still looking at it when Ryo came in.

“Hi, sorry I took so long; there was a massive queue.” Grocery bag in the crook of one arm, he strolled over to kiss Dee, and noticing the sheet of paper his partner was holding, raised one eyebrow.

“I wasn’t snooping,” Dee defended himself. “It was right there on the coffee table. I can’t read it anyway; it’s in some sort of code I can’t decipher.”

Ryo laughed. “It’s not code; it’s Japanese kanji. Carol found it tucked inside a library book and asked if I could translate it. I think she was hoping it would turn out to be a love letter or something like that, but she’s going to be disappointed.”

“Why? What is it?”

“Just a grocery list.”

Dee grinned. “Bummer. You gonna tell her the truth or make something up?”

“The truth of course. Not every mysterious note found in a book is going to be something exciting.”

The End
