Ryo wouldn’t have thought so when they first met, but Dee could be amazingly romantic when he wanted to be, surprising Ryo with small gifts, taking him to dinner at intimate little restaurants, and always remembering important anniversaries. It was sweet, it made Ryo feel loved and appreciated, and yet it also made him feel guilty.

Dee’s finding day, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day were easy to remember; it was the other important dates Ryo had trouble remembering; the anniversary of their first kiss, their first night together, their first date… He’d tried getting a diary and marking all their special occasions in it, but then he’d kept forgetting to check it.

“I’m a useless boyfriend,” he sighed when Dee surprised him with flowers and a box of chocolates to mark their second anniversary as a couple.

“What makes you say that?” Dee seemed completely baffled.

“I never remember anniversaries and you always do. You’re so thoughtful, and I don’t have a romantic bone in my body.”

“That’s not true! You took me out for a romantic meal for Valentine’s Day.”

Ryo snorted at that. “It’s impossible to miss when that is, even for me. It’s advertised for weeks in advance.”

“But you do other things too, like cooking my favourite meal when I’m having a bad day, or putting little notes in my lunch bag, or baking cookies, or staying up with me when the basketball is on late even though you’re so tired you fall asleep before the end. And what about the time you went to the other end of Manhattan so I could have my favourite donuts on a stakeout when the local shop ran out? It doesn’t matter if you don’t remember anniversaries; that just means I can surprise you the way you’re always surprising me.”

The End
