Well, she was a doctor she just worked for UNIT in that capacity. Not that I'm defending RTD or anything, I'd never do tat ;)

I imagine she was trained for that though, and anyway, she'd walked the earth for a year, and travelled with the Doctor so she must have learned a few things from all that too.
