Tom sobs in Blaise's arms nearly every night. It's nightmares of things past, of struggles and terrors endured, of memories of war manifesting in dreams. Blaise wakes to the sound of Tom sniffling in his sleep and he pulls his lover close and holds him as Tom wakens and clings to Blaise as if he's Tom's only lifeline.

It's 1950 and the war has been over for five years, but Tom's dreams haven't grown any less. Blaise worries, but he doesn't say anything. Instead, he does what he can and holds Tom as his lover weeps like a broken hearted child, soothes him with soft words and gentle strokes to Tom's dark hair. When the nightmares are so bad that Tom wakes screaming and sobbing, body slick with sweat, Blaise takes control and Legilimens into his lover's mind.

Winter seems to bring out the worst. Especially thunder storms and cracks of lightning. Tom clings to Blaise like a limpet when he's awake and when he's asleep and Blaise holds his lover and tries to comfort him as best he can.

He's not at all good at this. He's never had to be someone's protector as well as their lover, their best friend, their sole companion. Blaise tries, but sometimes he knows he can't do anything for his lover and that frustrates him.

"I wish I could do more," Blaise confides one dark night as Tom clings to him, burrowing close and sniffling against his chest. The sound of thunder is a dull crash and roar, the room of the tiny flat they live in illuminated at irregular intervals by the sharp white light of lightning. "I wish I could take away your pain, dooshyenka."

"You do, Blaise, you do," Tom whispers, and the words are lost in another crash of thunder. He whimpers and clings tighter and Blaise sighs softly, feeling useless and wishing there was so much more he could do, say.

"You keep the monsters at bay," Tom says then, looking up at his lover. His cheeks are tear streaked and his eyes are reddened, illuminated by another flash of lightning. He flinches with the sounds and the light and Blaise's heart cracks just a little more.

"I don't, you know," he says quietly. "I don't know what to do, my heart."

"Just keep doing what you're doing," Tom says softly, and his voice is full of desperate entreaty. "Don't leave me, Blaise. Don't."

Blaise's arms tighten around his lover and he kisses Tom's tear-streaked cheeks. "I won't leave you, solnyshko." Though one day, you may decide to send me away.
