nevermore

on Saturday i was able to watch Nevermore as part of the Luminato festival that's been happening in Toronto a while now. i'm embarrassed to say that this was my first time going. i've been going to more theatre lately and it's fun. i can admit to saying that. i used to go a lot with my last gf but that was years ago.

i figured it was finally time to just do it instead of just waiting around for that "special someone". i'm missed a lot already and it's about time i got out of my cave. i still have one foot in it... baby steps.

anyway, this years underlying theme for Luminato was Edgar Allan Poe. not all the shows had the theme but they were still enticing. there were a few shows i wished i had the time/money to watch. Robert LePage' nine-hour play Lipsynch (yeah NINE hours), Neil Gaiman's reading of The Graveyard Book followed by a Q&A with him (sooo miffed i couldn't see/hear him), the Nederlands Dans Theater (modern dance), The Children's Crusade which took place in a warehouse where you had to follow the actors throughout the warehouse. seriously, next year i'm taking the week off and enjoying the city.

even with all these missed chances i was able to get tickets for Nevermore and it was AWESOME. the music, costumes and overall feeling was like watching a live Tim Burton animation on stage. i know people would think it's a pure rip-off but there was that something extra. this was better than a Burton movie. way better. sure it was depressing as hell but there was this amazing beauty about it. the sadness was seducing and the humour dark.

if the Catalyst Theatre or a production of Nevermore happens where you live you MUST take the chance and watch it. you won't be disappointed. i just wish they had a dvd or sountrack of the production. yeah, i know. i wouldn't have thought i'd say something like that about a musical. haha. apparently, they'll be back in Toronto to put on their production of Frankenstein in the fall... sweetness. would anyone want to join me?
