it's been what the music scene has been doing for quite some time. I'm envious, though. While it's not a staggeringly huge audience, they at least have regular fans. Meaning they also have regular gigs.
Huwahaha, I just came from a long conversation with Johnny about this very thing. I'm lucky I'm alive and playing in this current time. According to him, back in the late 70s and 80s, you had to be half-gangster to survive in the sindikato that was the music industry. And so a lot of the old guard are. Apparently Johnny thinks this is the best scene he's ever seen (pun!), and he's been around for decades.
They don't have to defend their art and make it sound important with complicated theses. They don't have to worry that they're not functioning as bearers of a Filipino identity.
Though some people definitely do ... I hope they don't infect the rest of us.
They just play. They aren't even sure if they're going to get enough money for the ride home that night, but they still show up and play.
Yeah. This is one of the things people like Johnny have trouble wrapping their heads around. He himself is open-minded, but he's one of the few. It probably helps that he wasn't playing for the longest time.
I find it strange that I'd have a hard time having this conversation with you in real life. Well, maybe not so strange. It just means that my writing is more eloquent! Plus I'm not distracted by your dazzling beauty.
