Julie Borromeo runs Dance Arts Studio and was one of the founders of not only Philippine Ballet Theatre but also Dance Theatre Philippines, which is the progenitor of PBT. My dad danced for her. I interviewed her for historical facts for my thesis. She is telling me about Mir-I-Nisa, her brainchild and the first full-length Filipino ballet, which was performed during the inaugural season of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, when suddenly, she stops in mid-sentence and says,

"Are you a dancer? You look like a dancer."

Gee, I wonder what gave me away.

It's captured in our taped interview, and it's sooooo funny that she stops in the middle of her thought to say that. She was surprised when I said I danced for PBT, she thought I was from BP because she's sure she's seen me dance but she would've remembered me if I danced under her. I told her that I was never with the company when she was artistic director, which is pretty strange when you think about it. I've been a Tito Gener baby through and through.

I was (and still am) transcribing the interview, writing it down in a notebook with a pencil before I type it up. I haven't been writing with a pencil in a long time and I notice I'm so anal that I need it finely sharpened all the time. Then, I realized how wasteful I was, and how very Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets. Oooh, stopping to smell the dysfunction!
