the soundtrack to Joelle

*Got this from Luis K, my favorite kindly gentleman in the whole world.*

"If you were to create the soundtrack of your life, this would be the song playing when you are..."

LONELY OR DOWN:

Skunk Anansie's "Secretly"
The Beatles' "You Gotta Hide Your Love Away"
Sting's "When We Dance"
Stone Temple Pilots' "Interstate Love Song"

IN LOVE:

In general, it's the balcony scene from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. Specifically, I have a list. Late night drive in a storm, "Breathe In" by Frou Frou; evening walks on the Greenbelt to Rufino walkway, "Love and Affection" by Nelson; normal everyday stuff, "Hypnotize Me" by Wang Chung; waking up every morning from the time we hadn't told anyone yet to present time, "Chelsea Morning" by both Joni Mitchell and Neil Diamond. And people who know me know that I'm always singing either "Tenderly" or "The Very Thought of You" when I'm in love.

FIGHTING WITH YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER:

I think I was always too pissed off to romanticize this. But if I must have one, it would be, "Tampo" by Teeth.

HAVING SEX:

I wrote a short story where the background music of some hot sex was Led Zep's "Whole Lotta Love," but I've never done that myself. I guess I'm too impatient for ambience-setting.

NURSING A BROKEN HEART:

This song saved my life:

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day

So I'm sailing for tomorrow, my dreams are a dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain
I have my ship, and all her flags are a flyin'
She is all that I have left, and music is her name

Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What heaven brought you and me
Cannot be forgotten
I have been around the world
Lookin' for that woman-girl
Who knows love can endure
And you know it will

So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do
You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along
Make me forget about loving you
And the Southern Cross
- Crosby, Stills and Nash, introduced to me by Wolfgang, how ironic

IN NEED OF CHEERING UP:

george's "Release" and a lot of Blind Melon, especially "The Duke," and recently a lot of Franz Ferdinand

ABOUT TO EMBARK ON A ROAD TRIP:

I once listened to Led Zep's "The Song Remains the Same" before a plane trip to Cebu. I felt good the entire time I was there and I think this was why.

SUNBATHING ON A TROPICAL BEACH:

The entire Scarlet's Walk album by Tori Amos

FEELING GROGGY AND NEED TO WAKE UP:

Audioslave's "Cochise" worked for me for a while, but I left the CD in my Mandaluyong apartment, tsk.

FEELING SUICIDAL:

Razorback's "Tenderfoot," which always gets me back on track.

ANGRY, VERY ANGRY:

The Dawn's "Salimpusa" makes me angry for some reason. Hehe, joke.

SINGING AT THE VIDEOKE BAR:

Have you ever tried singing Basia's "Love is Contagious" ala Karaoke? It's fun! I also want to sing, "Alone" by Heart and "Making Love out of Nothing At All" by Air Supply, bwahahaha.

DANCING BY YOURSELF IN YOUR ROOM:

The B-52s' "Rock Lobster," most of Incubus' S.C.I.E.N.C.E., STP's "Big Bang Baby," won't you crash crash crash?

SINGING, DANCING AND DRUNK OFF YOUR ASS:

I guess Razorback, because the only times I've been drunk and singing were always at their gigs. Oh, if there's dancing, it's also Spy! (I'm lying, you can't make me dance in a club, no way)

PLAYING AIR GUITAR:

Hee, I don't, sorry. I air drum. Don't tell my boyfriend.

CHILLING ON A RAINY AFTERNOON:

everything Dave Matthews has ever written

REMINISCING ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL:

Oh gawd. Def Leppard, Poison, Van Halen, Skid Row, Motley Crue, early pre-destroyed by fame Bon Jovi, Aerosmith circa Love in an Elevator, Guns N Roses, though Sweet Child O Mine would only bite me in the ass after college. Oh and the Dawn, let's not forget.

REMINISCING ABOUT COLLEGE:

early college - Pearl Jam, Blind Melon, Extreme, The Cranberries, The Lemonheads, and there was this UP Fair gig with the Dawn performing that I was so sad to have missed

mid college - the love of my college life had convinced me rock was inferior to classical and I would listen to a lot of Bach Cello Suites, Leonard
Bernstein, Prokofiev, asides from all the other ballet stuff I listened to; all around me were songs that contributed to the golden age of pinoy rock as we know it today: Eheads, Put3ska, Teeth, Rivermaya (thanks to Nates and Rach when they were still together), Color It Red, POT, Sugar Hiccup, Razorback and Wolfgang. I went to Club Dredd with Rach to watch Put3ska and ended up seeing Eheads instead. Years later, Quillfolk and I were supposed to watch Wolfgang at an NU school concert (I forget what they're called), but I was attacked by higad and spent the night asleep in the tambayan while my friends smoked out in the grove. The first time Mayo attempted to have a real conversation with me, I was singing Wolfgang's "Change" under my breath. Ah such happy memories.

late college - a lot of early Purplechickens stuff that never made their album ("I don't want to rain on your parade, no..."), The Rentals, Smashing Pumpkins, more Blind Melon while stoned with La, Dave Matthews Band. I know there are more, since I spent a goddam lot of time in college, but this is all that's coming to mind now.

GETTING MARRIED:

I'll let you know when that happens.

Feel free to snatch and paste. *turning on some music*
