I had an interview today by an Economics major doing a term paper, she and her partner were writing about professions and the economy and they chose dance as their topic. She asked if I ever regretted giving up other jobs for dance and I said I didn't, especially when I'm onstage. Or completing a triple pirouette in class even, for that matter. She says the last person she interviewed said that dance was a starving artist profession and I said, not really, we're paid little but we're given enough time to do other things like teach ballet classes over the weekends and write freelance for whomever, etc. Starving artist, my parents brought us four kids up and sent us to one of the most expensive middle and high schools from what they made in our ballet school.
If we had to buy a house or had really expensive bills and payments to make or a high standard of living, then it is small. But, as I said, you just have to learn to be enterprising. Then again, I've always been the kind of person who refuses to be the victim in a situation. Starving artist? Pwede ba?
I told her that unless the Philippine economy gets better then the plight of dance and art in the country will not improve financially, but there will always be dancers and there will always be dance. Sure some companies are always on the brink of closing, but don't generalize, right?
Anyway, when I get interviewed like this, and when I'm trying to finish my conclusion - I'm stumped at the part where I discuss why the dance companies have it so bad right now - I wonder, what is this thing that I'm defending so much? Is it worth it at all? Then, I read Kingdom Come, the graphic novel featuring Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman in their old age, and I feel like, yes, there is some worth there, yes there is.
And, yes, I'm nuts, yes I am.
So here, a meme, nicked from
