[hush now. spoilers]

How do I describe River Song in a few words? Truth is, I can't because this woman is ridiculously complicated. She's a human with Time Lord DNA. She was stolen from her parents as an infant and conditioned to kill the Doctor, but later ran away and grew along up with her parents as Mels.

Mels was a rebellious criminal adolescent girl who loved the Raggedy Doctor and also wanted to kill him. So when the Doctor arrived one fine day, she forced her way on board the TARDIS at gunpoint and got shot by Hitler. After which she regenerated. Then she killed the Doctor, called herself a psychopath and terrorised Berlin. She ended up saving the Doctor though, showing remorse, and found out that she was River Song.

Then she became an archaeologist and killed the Doctor again after they got married in a strange alternate reality, only she really didn't kill him - it's complicated. She was imprisoned but constantly escaped to spend time with her husband. Then ensued a whole slew of adventures in which she met different versions of the Eleventh Doctor and flirted with him and saved his arse.

As Professor River Song, she went to the Library and had a two-episode adventure with Ten, who she didn't know KNOW~ as the Doctor, because he wasn't HER Doctor, not yet. At the end, she sacrificed herself so that the Doctor could live and save Donna and other people. And then the Doctor "saved" her.

So there you have it. Melody Pond, also known as Professor River Song. She developed in a jittery way throughout the series (damn timey-wimey balls of string *shakes fist* MOFFATTTT) from frightened infant to conditioned child to psychopathic adolescent to badass professor. She's unpredictable, strong, sassy, flirty, and a complete hbic.

01 : Time Is All Around; Regina Spektor
I hallucinate a cat between my feet
I'm stepping lightly so as not to hurt it
Everybody wants to say that you have changed
Of course you've changed, you've changed
Your mind's been rearranged

Leaves become most beautiful
When they're about to die
When they're about to fall from trees
When they're about to dry up

I chose this song because it's fragmented, somewhat. The last time River meets the Doctor is the first time he meets her. It's a tragic meeting, interspersed with muttered secrets and little revelations. She's the enigma, not him, even though he's almost a stranger to her. I think that River and the Doctor's relationship is really screwed up, because it's not truly sustained, rather it's about fleeting moments in time and space that they share, and that's kind of bittersweet.

02 : Bang Bang; Melanie Fiona
See me moving in silence
Feel destruction and biolence
Got my eye on the target and I'm aiming at'cha
BANG BANG!(I'm aiming at'cha)
BANG BANG! (I'm aiming at'cha)

Ain't nothing like the feeling
Of that cold bone metal in ya hand
Know I sound psycho, Daddy-O
You'll never understand

Let me introduce you to my chrome-plated bullet
She's shining (I'll whip it out on 'em)

Melody Pond, anyone? (Also let me chortle because the artist's name is Melanie. Mel for short. In my head. Moving on.) Mels and early!River use guns a lot. I like it. I think the song captures that almost playful psychopath that is Mels/River quite nicely.

03 : I'm Your Villain; Franz Ferdinand
I know what I am
I'm your villain
I don't give a damn if
I'm your villain
Because serious
You're so serious
But I've got ready salted
ready on your belly
If you want to have fun

See you later

Moving on to a more rocky~ beat. Mels/River has a dysfunctional relationship with the Doctor. On the one hand, she really really wants to kill him. And on the other hand, she wants to marry him and adores flirting with the man. Or Time Lord, whatever. This song reminds me of the part in Let's Kill Hitler when she kisses him and leaves.

04 : Assassin; John Mayer
I was a killer, was the best they'd ever seen
I'd steal your heart before you ever heard a thing
I'm an assassin and I had a job to do
Little did I know that girl was an assassin too

For me this song has two interpretations. One is that the Doctor is a killer and Mels/River is an assassin. Straightforward. Another one is that the Doctor, with all his knowledge, doesn't know Mels/River. There's something fatal about her that draws him in, because of what happened in the Library. Femme fatale I LIKE IT.

05 : I Just Wait; Paloma Faith
If I could hold your hand, yes I would,
Be with you every day, if I could.
But my lips are sealed, like they should,
But tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, I’m waiting.

Behind my smile lies, uncertainty.
If you choose a girl, will she be me?
I try to keep my composure today,
If I wish too hard, though you might wish away.
So I, I just wait.

She can't tell him everything she knows, and neither can he. Waiting happens to the both of them, but they never really meet at the right time, do they?

06 : Get Your Way; Jamie Cullum
Now, sit at the table, face to face,
Queen takes pawn, check or checkmate!
I feel your foot brush against my leg,
I'm not that easily led.

You flutter your eyes and you toss your hair,
I have to say that it is kind of unfair,
Let me tell you baby now what's in store,
You win the battle, but I'll win the war!

This entire song sorta captures that constant flirting that they do. Omg handcuffs. Omg a whole different birthday. Omg kiss kiss and stuff like that. I like that River always tries to needle him and shock him with her flirtatiousness and forwardness.

07 : Born To Die; Lana Del Ray
Don’t make me sad, don’t make me cry
Sometimes love is not enough and the road gets tough
I don’t know why
Keep making me laugh
Let's go get high
The road is long, we carry on
Try to have fun in the meantime

Come on take a walk on the wild side
Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain
You like your girls insane...
Choose your last words,
This is the last time
Cause you and I
We were born to die

The last time they kiss is the first time they kiss. It's the beginning of the end. He can't tell her anything, but she soon finds out. Back to the beginning again, in the Library.

08 : Time Is Running Out; Muse
You're something beautiful
A contradiction
I wanna play the game
I want the friction

You will be the death of me
You will be the death of me

[…]

Our time is running out
Our time is running out
You can't push it underground
You can't stop it screaming out
How did it come to this?

I think it's a rush against time for both of them. It's time for her to sacrifice herself. Then it's time for him to save her. Some parts of the song echo that tragic dysfunction that they share. And some parts just scream out raw desperation in the rush to do something, anything, for someone who matters.
