She stumbles over a fallen branch, but keeps moving through the darkness, through the fear that threatens to trip and choke her like a well-placed trap in the underbrush. Her breaths are ragged gulps, and she tries her hardest to swallow the sounds even as her feet crunch down on traitorous leaves on the forest floor. Soon both feet are bare and scratched with dirt.
The howls of the wolves draw closer, slipping around her, whistling, a broken compass of cold danger. She sees the basket she had left behind on the ground in front of her, and stops.
