His skin feels like it's burning, and Walt starts to ask if Ray's feeling okay, but then Ray kisses him hard, all teeth and tongue and fingernails digging into Walt's hips, and Walt doesn't say anything until it's over too soon and he's breathing hard, back against the wall.

"I missed you, motherfucker," Ray says, his voice raspy and raw with something other than too much booze.

Walt blinks, and reaches out to touch Ray on the forehead. He feels cool skin and relaxes just one moment before Ray attacks him again, this time push-pulling him down to the carpet where it's too fucking hot but just right.

It shouldn't feel numb, by all accounts. The poets and the writers all talk about the hurt, about the ache in the chest, the too-tight too-hot feeling that makes you want to rip everything apart.

They don't talk about the slow crawl of dull emptiness, the not-icy tenderness that develops over days of insomnia and coffee and stale cornflakes.

Bastards. He could have prepared for this, this split of what used to be them that is now you and me and him and broken.

Brad's almost glad when they tell him he's going off to Iraq to shoot and get shot. It sounds like what Rudy would say, but he's become the armor and he needs to feel shit like gunfire and grenades and gritty sand and awful plastic food.

He doesn't expect to feel a different kind of numb when he sees green eyes and a steady smile.

Title: Gain
Summary: It's all about the give and take.
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters/Pairings: Rowena/Helga
Genre: Gen, romance, muggle AU
Rating: G
Warnings: N/A
Word Count: 213
Author's Notes: For the fest. Prompt=title.

Rowena tries to chase after Helga in their crummy little flat, but fails, of course, because Helga has her glasses, and Rowena can't see shit past her outstretched arms. She stumbles forward and very nearly misses the small coffee table piled high with her statistics books, so she decides to just find her way back to the sofa and wait for Helga to calm her tits down.

"Ro," Helga says, a laugh in her voice, "do you trust me?"

"I'd trust you more if you'd give me back my glasses." Rowena folds her arms and waits.

"Ro," Helga says again, quieter this time, and Rowena is startled to see her coming closer and sitting on the floor in between her knees. "Do you trust me?"

The freckles on Helga's face are in sudden sharp focus, and Rowena's fingers itch to connect the dots. Helga's eyes are a warm caramel brown with flecks of gold and green. Helga's breath is surprisingly cool and she smells of brownies.

"Ro?" She says once more, lips so close to Rowena's own, and then the gap closes and Rowena learns how Helga's lips are incredibly soft and how her tongue slides and how her teeth nibble and tug.

Maybe sometimes there's something to gain from losing something else.
