So I've finally uploaded the photos from my birthday roadtrip, which was lots of fun. Basically, my brother and I hung out wiht a bunch of his friends, had innumerable drinks, played RockBand (I am wicked on bass), played pool, and had a midnight beach excursion. The drive down there was rainy, which worked because there was literally NO ONE else on the road for 75% of the time. Plus, at times the grey rainy cover was so thick that it totally obscured both horizons, and I was on a road between two beaches. Very surreal experience, and I didn't pull over and take a picture because I'm an idiot.
But I do have pictures of Jockey's Ridge at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This is where the Wright brothers flew their planes, and they have hang-gliding lessons there today. Those pictures are later in the update, and are behind the cut.
First, a picture of the crazy puppy that has finally discovered the wonders of cuddling. Riley!
I was awestruck by this overpass for some reason. It looks so much more impressive in person.
And the road goes ever on and on.....:)
That is easily the scariest bridge I've ever driven over. It wasn't tall, and it wasn't long. What it WAS, was incredibly old and rickety. It had its own speed limit of 25mph, and when I stopped on the middle to take this picture it creaked ominously. Very scary. On the return trip, an 18-wheeler squeezed by me in the other lane, and I have no idea how.
Pictures of the return trip came out better because the sky was beautifully clear. Behold!
By contrast, that was easily one of the most fun bridges I've driven over. It was wide and swooping and delightfully curved. Plus, the sound that it went over was magnificent. I wanted to stop in the middle here and take pictures of the ocean, but alas this day had much more vehicular traffic....and less of a shoulder on this particular stretch.
I stopped at Oregon Inlet and got a picture of the Bodie Island lighthouse...
As well as of the docks themselves.
And then, because I've wanted to check it out the last few times I've driven this way, I finally stopped at Jockey's Ridge.
THE PLACE IS RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!
I found these fox tracks there, and followed them back down the dune. He'd had quite a busy morning: marking territory, tracking prey. All the busy things in a fox's life.
And I leave you with a cool tree.
