I used to be a Wiccan/Pagan, Tree hugger, pacifict hippie myself. Until I got married, had children, paid taxes, grew up and had to pay off college loans then I became a conservative. The Christian part happened when I was 33. I'm actually still a tree hugger.

I am not sure exactly where you live. But here's a few things:

1) americans love their second amendment rights. It stems from the American revolution in the 1700's.

2) I've been sexually assaulted 2x and my Tae kwon do (I'm a brown belt) didn't do squat either time. That's actually not why I got my license permit.Its because I like to target shoot. I also know how to use a long bow.I don't hunt animals, nor am I crazy and want to shoot people. I like it. Also, if the crap hit the fan and a burglar robbed us...I can defend my children and sick my dog on them. My neighbor right across the street from my was robbed last year and he didn't have a house alarm. Mind you he has 3 Porsches in his drive way so it made him an easy target but still. Now he has an alarm. If he was home he would just have to dial 911 and wait for the police.

The reason why Americans are passionate and I'm ONE of them is because of these particular reasons: On April 19th 1775 the 13 colonies (remember we weren't Americans just yet we were all Britains aka colonists) were invaded by the British to DISARM them and take away ALL their weapons. Tensions had been running high especially in 1764 when there was the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea party (Britain was heavily taxing the colonist aka Taxation without representation) You may have heard of the story of Paul Revere where he says his famous line "THE BRITISH ARE COMING! THE BRITISH ARE COMING" That's from the battle of Lexington and Concord. Long story short after 1775 the colonists no longer really wanted to be apart of Britain ANY more. They wanted to be able to NOT be under their taxation and tyranny and wanted to be separate.

This is WHY they signed the Declaration of Independence and WHY we have a constitution...the 2nd Amendment is to ENSURE the government will NEVER be able to do that to it's citizens again. You'll not allowed to disarm citizens and now it seems that our government and local governments want to exactly this. I pray there will never be another revolutionary war but one day that might actually happen if they continue the path that we are currently on. It won't be pretty I tell you that much.

Yes, bad things, awful things do happen. The school shootings are awful...trust me I have 2 children under 13 and one in my belly that I am soon to give birth to. It makes me sick that mentally ill people/children get ahold of guns illegally and kill. I'm not saying I'm pro gun for that reason. But if you're not from the USA you might miss the news stories where people go into schools and stab and kill people (out of insanity) If you're from another country there is propoganda there that might taint your view on America in general. The fact of the matter is: crazy people crash into crowds with their cars, stab people...use rocks to smash people's heads in....yes sure they can't kill hundreds at a time like you can with an assault rife (people call it a semi automatic only the military can own a semi automatic...those are illegal in all 50 states). About 15 years ago a guy went nuts (locally where I live) went on a walking trail and ran over people bike riding and roller blading..with his CAR. He actually went after adults and children...i didn't see anyone saying we should ban cars after that. He just snapped. He was a business man too...not sure why he snapped either. The thing is you can take all the guns away...but there will still be evil and the mentally ill...disarming people just makes it worse that we're totally defenseless and you know what? I don't want our government to have total control. No one wants a dictatorship.

Also, Hitler, Mussolini, Mao Tze Tung and Stalin all disarmed their citizens...and we all know what those dictators did :( I could look it up but it makes me sick to my stomach.
