{Reserved} Willy Wonka III purpion May 26 2010, 03:15:40 UTC

Personality: Willy Wonka has a faceted personality that often confuses the one he is conversing with. He changes the subject often which could be associated with his hyperactivity. He can focus on a task if it's something that he wants to do. He is a germaphobe and often wears rubber gloves. In canon, he is never seen without them even when he was in the jungle, he wore rubber surgeon's gloves under his brown leather climber's gloves. He never touches anything with his bare hands which could be a physical manifestation of his inability to trust or be open with anyone. The more color he is around, the happier he seems to be though there is a large part of his personality that remains hidden. He is very modest. He doesn't like to be touched unless he wants to be touched and generally he will initiate the contact first.

He has a hidden dark side to him that he often tries to hide with a smile and laughter. He thinks much like a child and he cares less about the world around him. He's rather selfish at times and his ideas are better than everyone else's in his mind. He despises the idea of growing old. He's not afraid of it, he would rather not think about aging. He's a perpetual child trapped in a man's body with all the innocence that goes along with it marked with an occasional sprinkling of innuendo. He likes to keep people guessing by the way he uses innuendo and gestures. His imagination is very active and through this imagination, he is often viewed as insane. He is reclusive by nature and would rather be alone with his thoughts and allowed to create his images than be bothered with practical issues.

Willy is a polymath and it shows in his creations. He is a chemist, an engineer, culinary artist and a botanist with the adventurous spirit. Through his expertise in culinary arts and botanical knowledge, he has managed to not only create sweets that grow and can be harvested which are completely organic without preservatives, he has also managed to create an entire river of chocolate through his engineering. If he is told that something is impossible, he often will not hesitate to try the impossible to see if he can do it. He is a genius and is viewed as such, though his genius is often viewed as insanity in many ways.

Through his chemistry knowledge, he has found ways to make chocolate birds that can chirp, glass that is not only functional but tasty, flowers that grow and taste like cakes and other things that are not only "eatable" but functional as well. (More to be explained in Abilities and Additional Notes.)

History: Willy Wonka was the son of a dentist, Dr. Wilbur Wonka, that was famous in the city he had been raised in. He came from a strict household where sweets were often viewed as hazardous to his health. As a child, Willy was taught that sweets were not only a waste of time, but also detrimental to his scientific upbringing. He was raised with medical knowledge as well as dental knowledge. With this knowledge, it didn't stop Willy from going out every year at Halloween to Trick or Treat with his friends which was a past time that he enjoyed yet every year he never had the chance to enjoy the benefits of his catch, which most times wound up in the fireplace at the end of a lecture.

It was this yearly routine that nearly disheartened Willy into believing that his unsightly headgear and braces were going to remain his permanent bondage to never taste what others had. He was cleaning the fireplace one day after the embers had long since died out from the night before his findings were tossed into the inferno, Willy found a single piece of foil wrapped chocolate that he had wanted to try. The moment he stole a bite of the chocolate, his senses suddenly were awakened to a whole new set of possibilities that sparked his passion to learn about chocolates.

He had spent his allowance buying chocolates and other sweets and took notes on each one that he tried in a scientific way as a 12 year-old would and he often would partake in the sweets away from his home and hidden from his father's view. In secret, he would taste one, take notes then return home. He managed to hide these notes from his father for some time.

Willy's career choice infuriated his father. Wilbur had hoped that his son would follow in his footsteps but alas Willy had other plans to become a chocolatier which was completely opposite to what Wilbur wanted. It was then that Willy had decided to run away to continue his studies. Instead of running to the countries that he shouted to his father, Switzerland, Bavaria and other candy capitals of the world, he instead retreated to a museum only to find it closed. Willy returns home to find that the entire house, literally, had been moved.

Some years later, Willy had opened his first candy store on Cherry St. and quickly had become a success. Willy's early engineering for candy making was in its infancy in the back of the store where he made many of his creations. The manufacturing devices looked more akin to something out of Dr. Seuss that looked like they wouldn't work yet they did. It was this unique thinking that often landed him as the most innovative thinker in the business.

A few years later, Willy had expanded his business and cut the ribbon in the official opening of his factory which happens to be 50 times bigger than any other of its kind and it happens to take care of the unemployment issue for the small city. During his greatest time while the factory was in full swing, he was invited to India to build a palace made of chocolate for Prince Pondicherry. Willy stayed in India for the completion of this project and was quite satisfied with his work. He warned the prince to start eating right away but the prince refused. He wanted to live in the chocolate palace instead which was not a wise decision to make. When he returned home from India, he faced a whole new set of problems.

Thievery began to happen which made the Wonka Candy Factory part of the hit list of industrial espionage for other candy makers in the area. It was confirmed that employees were selling the candy maker's secrets to other makers which nearly put Wonka out of business completely. To prevent his losses entirely, he closed his factory a few short years after it was opened and closed the gates for good with the claim that he was "....closing my chocolate factory, forever." He didn't seem too happy to do so since Willy was very proud of his accomplishments only to have them whisked away by others that would enterprise on his hard work.

During the time that the factory was closed, he began an expedition to look for new flavors to try for his new line of candies. His travels led him to a far off land in an unknown area called Loompa Land where he met the Oompa Loompas. He tried their traditional foods and found them utterly repulsive and so ghastly that he couldn't believe that anyone would eat this stuff. Since the little tree dwellers, about a third of his own size, craved and worshiped the cocoa bean it was this discovery that made him strike a deal with the Oompa Loompa chief. The agreement was that if they came and worked for Mr. Wonka in the factory that the wages would be paid in cocoa beans which was a rare and highly prized delicacy to the tribe. It was then that the mystery of the Wonka Candy Factory had begun once the factory was back in business.

6 months prior to the Great Golden Ticket Hunt, Willy had a revelation during his semi-annual haircut. He picked up a single silver strand of hair and had an epiphany that he was aging and needed to find a "hair" to his factory. He began to distribute chocolate bars all over the world and only 5 had contained the golden tickets. It was a random set of events yet with a calculated cause.

Once all of the Golden Tickets were found and the end of the contest was announced on the day that the 5 chosen ones were to meet at the gates on the first of February, Willy set the stage with a series of strange events that would happen during the tour as a process of elimination. This took careful planning on his part. Since Willy has had little to no social contact other than his Oompa Loompas, he had become slightly twisted in his way of thinking by using the children as examples, yet he does so in a manner that reflects his childish mentality.

The puppet stage that caught on fire was the first time that anyone had seen Willy Wonka in years. His childish way of thinking was reflected in everything he created. No one really knew the reason why he let the stage catch fire. No one asked. Once the contestants were inside the factory and the tour began, that was when everything was set into motion. The first test was the Chocolate Room and the very beginning of the tour. It was here in this room that Veruca Salt discovered the Oompa Loompas first and the tour participates crowded around to see except for Augustus Gloop who was busy devouring everything in sight. This was the very room that Augustus Gloop was eliminated for his gluttonous behavior and his failure to listen to Mr. Wonka's warning.

Willy had watched in curiosity as Augustus Gloop was sucked up the pipe while a frantic Mrs. Gloop watched in horror as her son was taken away. She demanded Willy to tell her where the pipe goes and Willy exclaims with a broad smile that the pipe leads to the fudge room where Augustus will be turned into fudge. At this point, Willy summoned one of his Oompa Loompa workers to escort Mrs. Gloop to the Fudge Room to locate and extract her wayward offspring from the chocolate mixing barrel. Through this instruction, the Oompa Loompa worker did as he was told with a panicked Mrs. Gloop in tow.

It was here that Willy had informed the group that the tour wasn't finished and the parents in the group began to look a little worried but not as much as they were looking forward to the big prize. The greed began to set in and Willy was being looked at as a rather odd man than a genius of his field. The tour boat had approached and the remaining 4 contestants boarded the Oompa Loopa powered candy boat that sailed on the chocolate river. Through the high speed, gloopy, messy ride, Willy excitedly called out to the cadence master which was a blue clad Oompa Loompa to stop the boat just outside the Inventing Room.

Once inside, Willy informs the group that the Inventing Room was the most important room in the entire factory. He also informs them to have fun but don't touch anything and he meant it literally. The kids and parents happily moved to various parts of the room and it was Violet that asked Willy what the large tank in the center was for. Willy approached the tank happily and explained what a Gobstopper was. It was also in this room that Willy explains his Hair Toffee and as if on cue when Willy mentioned that he didn't have the formula quite right, an Oompa Loompa covered head to toe in long brown hair that resembled Cousin It had shown up. Just shortly after, Willy had pulled a lever to start a machine that revealed his latest invention, Wonka's Magic Chewing Gum. The elaborate machine ejected the gum and it was Violet Beauregard that snatched the piece up.

After Willy had explained what the gum was supposed to do, Violet put the stick of gum in her mouth and began to chew it. She raved about how great it was and her mother applauded her daughter's initiative. It was here that Willy had warned her to spit out the gum, yet his warnings were left ignored as the girl started to turn blue. Violet's mother was frightened at first about the entire situation then that fear turned to anger since now the situation was out of her control as she watched her champion daughter swell up nearly ten times her natural size. Willy watched in horror at first then used this situation to his advantage to tell Mrs. Beauregard that he tried the same formula on 20 Oompa Loompas with the same result which infuriated the mother. Willy told his workers that she needed to be taken to the Juicing Room and Violet's mother once again grew frightened when she asked about what was going to happen to her daughter. Willy informed her that she was to be squeezed and that really prompted Violet's mother to spring into action and go with her daughter to the Juicing Room.

With three contestants remaining, they left the Inventing room on foot and headed to the Nut Sorting Room where Mr. Salt, Veruca's father, decided to inform Willy that he was in the nut business while handing the candy-maker his card. Willy quickly discarded it over his shoulder without giving it a second thought and completely ignored Mr. Salt's lecture on nuts by calling him weird. Once he opened the door to reveal his secret to his nut sorting, the young Veruca's eyes grew wide and she made her choice to have one of her own in the form of a demand. Willy refused to sell the squirrel and Veruca threw a tantrum, then making the choice to obtain one herself. Willy had warned her not to and for the third time was ignored with Veruca's mind only on the squirrel and not to Willy's warning.

Just as she reached for the furry woodland creature, all the squirrels leaped off of their chairs and began to attack the girl which caused the father to panic and Willy to search through his keys to find the right one. He knew which key it was; he was stalling for time, or so it was thought by the way Mr. Salt was looking at the odd candy-maker. Once Veruca was tossed into the chute with the other bad nuts, Willy had miraculously found the key to open the gate which in turn prompted Mr. Salt to go after his daughter in the same turn caused Mr. Salt to fall into the same chute that his daughter was in. (There was only one chute to begin with in the middle of the floor.)

A few short moments after the Salts were tossed into the garbage chute, Willy was informed by one of his Oompa Loompa workers that the incinerator was broken and there was three weeks of rotten garbage to break their fall. This elicited an expression of disgust with the remaining contestants and their parents.

With the two remaining contestants, Willy got the idea to use the elevator which was made of glass and claims that it's the fastest method of travel through the factory. Willy was very happy to show the deeper inner workings of the factory to the two remaining guests. He pointed out Fudge Mountain and the room just after Fudge Mountain was a place where three Oompa Loompa were shearing pink sheep. Willy seemed a bit embarrassed about the revelation that it was enough to cause him not to want to discuss it.

After a very quick tour with the aid of the glass elevator, Mike insisted that he would be the one to pick the next room. Willy indulges the boy as if he knew exactly what room he was going to choose. The moment the elevator doors parted, Willy informed the diminishing group that their eyes needed to be covered and reached for the goggles propped on a rack next to the opening. Willy began to discuss his latest and greatest invention with glee just as Mike Teavee began his rebuke of Willy's idea by establishing that he was smarter than the candy-maker. The belittlement from Mike continues when he discovers that the device that shrank the chocolate and transported to the television set is a teleportation device rather than a device that would allow the masses to reach through and take the chocolate from the home sets.

Willy warned the boy not to "...push my button...." which fell on deaf ears to the young Mike Teavee. It was after Mike was retrieved by his father that Willy suggested that the boy be put in the taffy puller to be straightened out with the horrified Mr. Teavee wondering where Willy's sanity had gone. An Oompa Loompa worker had come to escort the two to the designated room in which he followed without provocation.

Willy commenced with his tour and turned to ask how many children were left only to discover that Charlie was the only one that remained. With a hopeful smile and a genuine handshake, Willy congratulated Charlie for winning the contest. The three entered the elevator; Charlie's grandfather Joe, Willy and Charlie Bucket, to return to the winner's home with the purpose to inform the family of what Charlie actually won.

At first, the offer seemed like a dream come true until Willy gave the stipulation that the family couldn't come along which caused Charlie to turn down the offer. Willy seemed struck by the refusal. In his mind, he thought that his offer was genuine and that it was every child's dream to own his or her own candy factory only to discover that Charlie was far more interested in being with his family than having all the chocolate in the world. This revelation confused Willy since he hadn't been with his family since his early teens. Willy left the house after realizing that Charlie was not going to change his mind with a heavy heart. He seemed more disappointed than hurt and more confused as he took in the rejection.

After some time, Willy was contemplating where it was he had gone wrong. Everything he made didn't seem right. It was as if he was trying to sort out his feelings on what was happening during his therapy session with one of his Oompa Loompas. Willy finally came to the conclusion that whatever he felt like, he made it and since he was feeling terrible, the candy he was making was terrible. It was this point that drove Willy to find Charlie again to find out a way to heal Willy's conflicting heart. He met up with Charlie again and this time, it was Willy that asked what it was that made Charlie feel better when he was down. Charlie informed the candy-maker that his family made him feel better. Willy didn't like the idea at first and through Charlie's suggestion that he would go visit his father, Willy was reluctant to go by himself to face the only man he feared the most in his life.

Upon meeting his father with Charlie by his side, Willy felt frightened to see the dentist again. Willy didn't reveal himself to the aging man just yet as he was being looked at by his father. With tools in hand, it was Wilbur that discovered who was sitting in the chair with a look of shock and mild happiness in his eyes. Willy spoke to his father for the first time in years with the greeting of "Hi, Dad." The father and son was now in the beginning stages of repairing their once severed relationship and with the hope that the years that come after will be happier than before. Willy learned then that the importance of family made all the difference in the world.

First Person Sample: Um...so I'm supposed to give a narration? Okie dokie, don't say I didn't warn you. I guess you can say that I started life like any other kid. [He pauses for a moment and looks over his shoulder at a non-disclosed person from the camera's view.] Wait, how far back do you want me to go? [There was some mumbling and a sigh was heard from the chocolatier.] Great....so where was I....oh yes! Well, there's not really much to tell. I had a mother, a father and cousins just like any other person, I suppose. But really, the only thing that was different with me was...well...my love for sweets.

You see, I couldn't have any and oh boy would I sneak some. Why, one day, my dad caught me with a whole box of chocolates and well...he grounded me for a few weeks. Why? He hated it. Then when I told him that I wanted to be a chocolatier, he hated it even more. You can say that we butted head like two goats on the mountain. One wanted dominance and the other just wanted to prove that he was strong enough to make his own decisions. You know how old goats are. Well....he bumped me off the mountain so I had to climb my way back up.

Do I really have to say anymore? [He lolls his head to the side in exasperation, looking at the non-disclosed person. Then some more mumbles and another sigh.] No, I think that's enough. Really. Anymore and I'll be needing a bucket to collect my guts. 'Kay? Bye. [He reaches over and shuts off the camera.]

Third Person Sample: Willy sat in front of the fireplace and read from a book that he found in the library that caught his attention. He was not in the mood to play, he simply wanted to relax. Inside his jacket pocket, he pulled out a set of reading glasses that were so thin they could fit into a sliding case that looked like a pen. He placed them on the bridge of his nose and opened the book. It took only a few minutes for him to get into his reading and blocked out just about everything else from his senses. His concentration was deep. The subject matter....Shakespeare.

Inside his mind, he saw epic tales of mystique, intrigue, irony and romance. A grand adventure waited for him in his mind and he loved every moment of it. Being as imaginative as he was, it didn't take too long at all for him to slip into his parts as he slowly stood from the chair and began to act the parts with body language and everything else that went along with it. He even acted out the parts in the brackets such as; Enter Hamlet, stage left or Enter Ophilia rear center. To Willy, this was perfect acting.

Despite if he ever obtained an audience or not, it didn't really seem to matter. He was having fun with the most epic of play writers of all times and he even thought he imagined Shakespeare himself giving him applause as the play was finished. This was how he passed the time and the library was his stage as he took his bows to his audience that was not present and slowly slipped the book back into its slot on the shelf. He exited the library with a spring in his step and a whistle to his tune, making his way to the kitchen to begin the preparations for this evening's dessert.

Notes: Since Willy's age is completely unknown other than what it's believed he is, I used the date the book was published first as the guide which was July 15, 1964. (The month and day were added since it was hard to track when the book first hit the shelves in those times.)
