[Fai was sitting outside with a hammer in his hands as he appeared to be hammering something lightly together, if at all. Fai wasn't really interested in doing the work or doing it as quickly as possible so instead he was taking the lazy way out and only pretending to do something when clearly he wasn't. In fact, Fai hadn't a clue to even what he ( Read more... )

[Tris is walking by and looking at the wood. She's smiling a little.] Quite a lot.

Part of learning about magic back home is seeing what potential lies in things most people consider everyday... Like clothing. [Tris is gladder and gladder that Sandry made her clothes with every passing day.]

That sounds very interesting. Soo is that how it was like in your world, or how you learned about magic anyway?

[Fai seems to have stopped working completely as he turns around and sits there looking over with a smile. Leaning about other types magic was simply fascinating to him.]

Well, for one thing, you have to be born with magic. It's not something a normal person can just learn. The rest depends on what sort you have- there are 'academic' mages, who work what most people think of as magic, and ambient mages who have magic that specifically expresses itself through something else, like blacksmithing, carpentry, or plants.

[Well Fai certainlly is listening carefully and with that sense of magic around him right now he can guess one thing.]

Can you do magic yourself?

[Tris is nodding.] I'm an ambient mage. And you- [Tris is turning her head so you're in the corner of her eye, just past the edges of her glasses.] You have magic as well.

[Well that was unexpected and his face clearly showed that he was surprised, if only for a brief moment before he smiled.]

Good guess. Yes I do have magic, how exactly did you figure that one out?

It's a common enough ability for mages back home to be able to see magic. Considering who my main teacher was, if I didn't have that ability- or at least something spelled to do so- he would probably be disappointed.

So, it's something you have at birth?

Magic is, but the ability to see it can be learned, if your teacher knows how to take advantage of a young and impressionable mind... [That tone totally does not give the impression that there is a Story behind it. Except for the part where it does.]

[Fai gives a slightly nod, listening very carefully as he does.]

Much like me then, born with magic, but learnt spell as I went along.

To some degree, yes. My magic doesn't usually run well with that, but stitch-witches can embroider signs for health and strength, carpenter- and smith-mages might engrave signs for prosperity or protection, or spell against accidental fire.

So, different magic works different way. Guess all magic can be different depending on the world you come from.

A cook-mage can hardly engrave symbols in a stew. [It's agreement, if backhanded.] I've discovered that, just by being here- I'm actually taking notes on what I learn.

Taking notes? What for may I ask?
