[It's early enough that Mello doesn't think he'll be discovered at the ice skating rink in Bryant Park.
Mello was one of the few Wammy Kids who excelled not only in academics, but in athletics as well. In school it was something he always prided himself on because Near sure as Hell couldn't run a mile let alone do it as fast as Mello. Athletics was the one thing he could do better than Near. And, in the long run, it counted for nothing (at least Mello felt) but for a quick pick-me-up it was always nice to remember.
Ice skating was something he fell into by accident. The pond at Wammy's froze over every year and an adventurous Mello was always one of the first to test the ice. Eventually Linda convinced him to strap ice skates to his feet, even if it was just to stop her nagging. And Mello discovered he really actually liked it liked it.
Near never even got close to the pond, frozen or otherwise. Which might be part of the reason why Mello likes swimming and skating. Just to spite that albino twit.
He knew the connotations that came with ice skating, especially considering his small frame and sexual preference. But Mello is far from a figure skater. He has always pushed himself to be fast, strong, agile. So on ice he more mimics speed skaters.
Now, in the chilly December morning, with black hockey skates strapped to his feet Mello pushes off onto the rink.
Whether he enjoys it or not Mello does not want to be caught ice skating. He'll be caught HAVING A GOOD TIME. He needs to keep up appearances and it's hard to be threatening when you're actually happy and momentarily care free]
