[The feed cuts in, and it is clearly being carried in the jeans pocket of a certain hunchy young man. The view is of the floor of the parlor. In front of him, Godiva scurries, then makes a leap off camera. A second later, she cries out, very Britishly.]

Oh, Ryuzaki, do look here! This wasn't here last time!

[The movement stops briefly, then ( Read more... )

I am interested to see your take on this.

Yeah?

[Matt feels...like he should thank him, or tell him that he's honored. Or something dorky like that. But hey, it's really high praise considering the source.]

Almost there.

Coming in.

Christ, I actually ran.

[Not to mention the fact that he's technically taking orders from two people now.]

You are just in time, Matt. Come closer. [He gestures toward the desk he and Mello are crowded around, pouring over the alethiometer.]

Ran like the light fucking breeze. Get your ass over here.

[Jerks his head towards the desk]

[Matt takes one last drag of his cigarette before putting it out at the door. Scout, without the need for nicotine, hurries on ahead of him.]

Whoa.

[The redhead blinks at the alethiometer.]

Think that's real gold?

[Everyone's concerned about the gold.]

Mello and I have reason to believe the Alethiometer will only provide accurate readings to a certain person or people. It does not appear to be either of us. Will you please give it a try?

And if you can't figure out exactly what makes the fourth needle spin. Try to avoid taking the damn thing apart.

[No matter how much he wants to. The last thing they need is for it to break. When it comes to machines Mello usually lets Matt handle all the hard work. Because what is frustrating and impossible for Mello seems to come naturally to Matt.]

[Matt's eyes don't miss much. He made mention of the gold, but he's actually far more curious about the symbols on the thing. He nods and holds his hand out, though there's some slight hesitation when Mello mentions not taking it apart.

Because you know he wants to.]

[L picks the Alethiometer up, in between thumb and forefinger on the top dial, holding it that way despite its weight, and hands it to Matt. He watches closely for what Matt will do with it.]

[Yeah, Mello knows Matt wants to take it apart, that's why he clarified. Matt's been gutting electronics since Mello met him and while he trusts Matt with everything from the tiniest clockwork to the engines of their vehicles THIS is an entirely different animal all together.]

[Matt looks down at the thing, holding it surprisingly carefully for...well, Matt. After a moment he pushes his goggles up into his hair and takes an even closer look.]

Huh.

[And after that very telling assessment, he fiddles with it some more while murmuring to himself.]

Might really be broken.

[Man, if L and Mello weren't right there...]

I do not see what use the Author has to give us a broken tool.

[Unless she is just messing with them, as Mello said. But L likes believing in order over chaos. Logic will be able to help them through this.]
