[Ichabod found a candle that he could use in case they needed the extra light in their search through the apartment building that he and Elizabeth were staying in. He also found two thin pieces of metal and decided that lockpicking wasn't a crime if the residents were not there to protest. He learned this skill as an investigator when landlords

[And a nuclear leak isn't natural but they don't exactly know that just yet.]

I can understand that much..but what do you mean? Something unnatural?

Ah!
[He moved through the apartment and saw that some was in disarray as if a person ran out in a hurry and knocked down a few items in the process.]
Something caused the residents to leave in a hurry, as it seems. Look here.
[He kneels down in front of the knocked down vase with the long dead flowers still inside that have now turned to ashen dust but the impression was still there and stained the rug from the decay.]
Whatever happened here, the residents were frightened enough to leave their belongings behind. This only proves that they didn't die here hence the plant material stain on the rug. If they had, we would have encountered something by now, yes?

Yes, that does make sense..but we don't know anything about what drove them away - depending on how long ago it happened, there may be no way of finding out

[He rummages through the room to see if he could find a calendar, a newspaper, anything with a date and see if he could find the year at least. He instead finds a weathered check book and looks at the date. Since the language was incomprehensible to him, he gathered that the year was 1986.]

..I'm starting to wish I'd taken the time to learn Russian..

To my great regret, I never learned either.
[He looked over his shoulder at Elizabeth with a sad smile.]
I can speak Dutch, French, German and Italian though neither of them are remotely close to Russian.

Look at this..
[As it turned out, it was a dictionary..a convieniant, Russian -English dictionary.
She smiles brightly]
This looks like it could be useful

[Now that would definitely help out. What a way to learn a language.]
Good work!
[Ichabod remembers the official looking letter and decides that now was a good a time as any to start translating.]
Reply
I wonder what it'll end up saying

[He takes his seat at the table and unfolds the letter. One by one he looks up the words and one by one, he writes them down. The whole decoding process could take an hour. Once he was finished, he read it off.]
