One more thing... I just wanted to say that not all the people who are anti-adoption want to abolish it completely. There's a lot of people who want to reform it to insure that ONLY the children who really, truly need new homes get placed for adoption. So they want to do things like change the amount of time that a woman has to reconsider (since people can't really think clearly in the first 24 hours after birth). Some of the effort is to ensure that women thinking of giving up their babies obtain proper legal and psychological counselling, as well as information about what government resources are available to help them if they want to raise their own kids. In the states part of the effort is to have a federal reform since right now each state has different laws and adoption agencies will encourage women to move into states that have laws which favor the adoptive parents. Some want to switch things so that there are only government run adoption agencies and no private ones, since private agencies are agencies that earn money by trying to seperate babies from their mothers. Others want to change things so as to insure that fathers have a chance to claim their children. Some of the more radical suggestions I've heard are suggestions that adoption is abolished in favor of a permadent guardianship system that does not involve altering the child's birth certificate but recognizes that the child "belongs" to two families. A few suggest a sort of co-parenting arrangement whereby adoptive parents get custody but that birth parents still maintain the same sort of parental rights that non-custodial divorced parents get. Others just want to insure that everyone has legal access to their medical histories. The problem is that as long as people think that adoption is a cheerful happy good thing and that children given up for adoption are truly unwanted then even the small attempts at reform end up failing.
