My house is damn cold. Now that I've gotten that confirmed in an energy audit, I just feel only that much colder. Last winter we had feet of snow, but this winter it seems that we've had more days of below-freezing temperatures. I can't find any data to support this--temps this winter are reportedly above average--but cold weather seems more rewarding when there's snow.
I found out from the energy audit how shoddily-built my cute little house really is. There are air leaks where walls meet. The kitchen cabinets don't have sheetrock behind them. Surprisingly, the windows are not a priority for replacement because there are so many other areas of heat loss. I don't know how the last owner was able to live here for thirty years. I'm glad I was able to sit on a chunk of my homebuyer credit for a year, because now it's going to go to air sealing and attic insulation. It'll be a contest to replace the heat pump or the backyard fence, whichever fails first.
Now I can see how my mom could let house maintenance get away from her--there's always something that needs fixing, and it never stops. I thought I could be not like my mom and TA's mom with their houses falling down around them, while they progressively live in less and less space, but I can see how it can happen.
