I understand if you don't LIKE what has happened on a show (quit watching, simple solution).
I understand if you really, really, really want your OTP together (I may have invented Titanic Shipping, so I mean it, I really, really GET IT).
So, first things first:
I keep thinking I will get used to how beautiful Ian Somerhalder is, but it never happens. HE IS AN EYE-DEFYING PHENOMENON AND I CAN'T HANDLE THAT I WILL NEVER HAVE SEX WITH HIM. For reals. *ahem*
Okay, moving on.
Damon and Elena, have I mentioned them ever before? Once or twice, maybe? I don't know how they do it, how they always make me FEEL so goddamn much, but they do. They are just the magic of everything beautiful and magical and perfect. And the tabloids can LIE ALL DAY LONG, but Nina and Ian are consummate professionals and that's obvious by their scenes together.
Furthermore, Stefan Salvatore. I normally want to maim him in some terrible way, but I felt really sorry for him this episode, and his storyline is actually the main part of my lead-in rant here: if you think STEFAN CO-DEPENDENT SALVATORE HAS GIVEN UP ON HIS BIG BROTHER, YOU ARE A FUCKING LUNATIC. He might try to spare Elena whatever insanity he's engaged in, but you know, he's in something up to his EYEBALLS. He can't help himself. But how precious and amazing and TOO GOOD FOR HIM AS WE'VE ALWAYS KNOWN is Miss Caroline Forbes? In S1, Elena was my favorite, but in S2, Caroline became my favorite. Then in S3, Elena again, and sometimes Bonnie, and often Rebekah, and the same thru S4. In S5 there was a minute and a half where Katherine became my favorite, but mostly it was Elena, but tonight, it was all CAROLINE.
I still love Elena, don't get me wrong. I love her and all her fucked-up-ness, I do. But I love that Caroline soldiers thru, Little Miss Fix-it. She's darling. And she's gonna get shit done.
It was awesome to have Alaric and his dry wit back. Pitch perfect, and as if he'd never left, it reminded me of how much I loved him and how much I've missed him, and no matter what angst there is, ALARIC IS ALIVE. It's so great. And I love that they told us what happened to Meredith, though I have to say, I wish Torrey and Paul didn't split up so that she could come back. I Floved her.
We'll see about Jo. All I can think about is that she was Gretchen on Prison Break and she messed that show up. But I still kinda liked her, too.
Tyler, Matt, & Jeremy. You know, whatevs. And God bless Liz Forbes. Still kicking it, six seasons later.
All in all, I thought it was a strong premiere. Nothing will ever be "The Return" but it was good. I am hooked, and interested in where everything's going. Even Tyler intrigued me some. I still don't care much about Liv and Luke, but at least fucking Enzo wasn't thrust upon me in this episode.
The final scene with Collective Soul -- I was mostly spoiled for that anyway, but I loved how clearly the 90s rang through there. It was a cute and intriguing scene. And I can't believe Damon would willingly wear flannel, so I'm sure he had to have a traumatic brain injury. Like amnesia.
I saw where
florencia7 commented that she thinks this will lead to no-memory!Damon and compelled-away-memory!Elena getting to meet again for the first time and fall in love all over again, and that idea is super interesting to me. Plus, how fun for Ian and Nina to play.
BRING ON S6!
ETA: After watching the promo for 6x02, I'd love it if the moment Elena fell in love with Damon was in 2x08, you know, when he told her he loved her for the first time. That's always been my head canon anyway. ♥
