The first time I saw TTB, I was like 7. I didn't see all of it, but that's when it aired on TV for the first time--and my mother wasn't very good about having me watch age-appropriate shows, LOL. Anyway, I had always had this memory of Meggie running away from Ralph on the beach, so years later, when I was 12 or 13, it was being re-run on TV, and I found it and watched the entire thing. I bawled a ridiculous amount over the whole thing, read the book (I remember having the book with me in homeroom when I was in 8th grade, and my teacher was like, um, what?), and was in general obsessed with it.

Then in my early to mid-20s, I saw it again, and it just hit me--ugh! If he really loved her, he would never have DONE any of the things he did. What a miserable character he was. Horrible. If you ever want to read a good Catholic Priest story, you should check out Andrew Greeley's Thy Brother's Wife. It's gorgeous, and Sean is a completely lovable character as is Nora. Plus it's an interesting look at Catholicism if that's at all interesting ( ... )
