[+] So Veronica's silence at Keith's huge disappointment in her not taking the lawyer job is so sad, made even sadder by the thing that happens next. Deputy Sachs finally coming to the conclusion that he can't be associated with these corrupt asshats anymore is just a little too late...both literally and figuratively. And, this too is a callback, right? I mean, there are a couple of times when Veronica thinks her dad might die or is dead during the series, so this is a huge moment for her, yet again. To be without her parent is not something she can handle, even this grown-up version of her. And that's how the shell is finally cracked all the way open and her vulnerability is fully exposed.
[+] RIP, Deputy Sachs.
[+] So, here's the scene we've been waiting for, FOR LIKE EVER, right? Remember how in S1 and early S2 Veronica and Logan's kissing/make-out scenes were pretty hot, but by the time they were having actual sex in S3, we like, never really got to see it? This is a payoff, I'm sure. This is Rob Thomas' ACTUAL LOVE LETTER to us. And it's so beautiful...just be prepared for me to go on for days about this not-quite-3-minutes-long sequence of the movie. Because it starts with Logan carrying her into the house. I'm a sucker for BIG STRONG MAN CARRIES DAINTY LITTLE WOMAN, and I don't even care if that makes me not a feminist or whatever. That shot is PERFECTION. And then he lays her on the bed. And then he takes off her shoes. He covers her up. He closes the blinds. My head-canon here is that Veronica, while half-asleep and emotionally exhausted, expects he'll stay. He's probably just doing these things, she can hear him, obviously, but then he's gonna toe off his shoes and climb on the bed with her. Or something. But then he leaves the room where she's "sleeping" and goes out to the living room. She can still hear him, though, and she starts to wonder -- should she tell him to stay? Should she...? Because while Logan's writing her a note to call when she wakes, she's stripping off her clothes and throwing on a sleep shirt. When she comes out to the living room, she's wearing a t-shirt AND THAT'S IT. I'd presume there are panties, maybe even her bra is still on, but, y'all, she's NOT WEARING PANTS. She, in that short amount of time, decided something momentous, not only because it would make her feel better in the wake of her dad's accident, but because Logan isn't going to presume anything. He's a perfect gentleman. But he totally looks at her bare legs when she says, "Wait." And his quiet little nod, "Kay" after she says don't go, JUST GUH. SO MANY FEELINGS. So much tension. I mean, if all they'd done here is have a serious cuddle, I still would have been turned on, I swear. But no, it's so much more than that....
Because, how much Veronica wants him in this scene--it's just so palpable. She's kept a tight lid on it, for four days, or five, whatever it is that they've been back together, but here, she's just stripped bare. It's something that you always knew when you watched the series, what was between them was always passionate, volatile, etc, but they are grown-ups now. There is something very adult about that scene, that is so different than any of their previous encounters. It has a lot to do with the fact that it feels like Veronica will come without him even getting inside her, and it's just so nice to see her need/want/love Logan so much, for the acknowledgement of it, for the EMBRACING of it. It's a perfect scene, in the midst of a perfect film. I cannot properly express my SQUEE over it.
[+] I am especially fond of Logan's little smile when Veronica wakes him the next morning with her "let's get Gia" plan. He loves this girl, this woman who he sometimes doesn't even recognize, but then he totally does.
[+] I should make mention of Krysten Ritter here because I haven't said anything about her really thus far: I really enjoy her, and I really loved Gia in the series, so it was nice that they brought her back. The unfolding of the mystery here is fun, with Veronica hiding in plain sight, I might add. The way she takes offense to Cobb calling her a nosy bitch is pretty funny, too.
[+] The whole sequence at Gia's apartment really had me on the edge of my seat--I was scared the whole time, and unsure if I wanted Logan to turn up and save her, or Veronica to save herself, like she has so many times. Also, in case it's not clear: DON'T DO DRUGS. BAD THINGS HAPPEN.
[+] RIP, Gia.
[+] Keith waking up to the news reporting all of Veronica's magic was pretty cool -- this might not be the life you want for her, but it's the life she's good at, Daddy Mars.
[+] Logan and Veronica's good-bye--the silhouettes, the kisses, the smart dialogue, and then the ULTIMATE CALLBACK to epic ruined continents and all that--what I love most of all about that is that obviously at some point Veronica told him what he said that night, because remember how he was drunk and when she came back the next morning he had spent the night with Kendall and he didn't seem to remember it? Or was that just Logan protecting himself back then? Either way, it was a gorgeous use of previous dialogue, to which I give A++++++ and THUMBS UP. Also, the tears in Veronica's eyes as she watches him go...UGH, RIGHT IN THE HEART.
[+] I really love her last scene with Wallace at Neptune high--not just for the callbacks to S1 and 2, but for her seeing some Veronica-esque girl sitting alone at a table. Remember when, VMars? Remember when that girl was you?
[+] The last two scenes with Weevil -- this is what I've been waiting for...I love that as Veronica's voiceover about how she can't change things, and this is who she is, and she's an addict, happily returning to the place she can't leave, for whatever reason, we see Weevil getting back on his bike, having also returned to this former branch of self that is not necessarily the smartest thing, but it's the thing he knows, it's the thing he's good at, and it's the thing that will keep him alive and out of jail. I find that all very poetic, and I love the tie of it all together.
[+] P.S. Mac left Kane Software, for Mars Investigations? Or is she doing that on the side. You know they can't pay her what Kane can.
[+] I sure hope we get more! MOAR, MOAR, MOAR!
[+] One last shot of Franco in his skinny jeans, nice.
[+] And the thing I missed in the theater because I had to pee so badly that I didn't stay all the way through the credits the way I normally do: Logan's new voicemail message. LOL, but also poignant as always. And he sounds ridiculously happy in it, so it's obviously what his outgoing message is after he and Veronica are back together:
This is Logan, reminding you, if you're offered a seat on a rocket ship, don't ask which seat. Just get on. Sheryl Sandberg said that. So don't leave a message. Go get on that rocket ship! Or leave a message. Your call. Your decision will tell me a lot about you.
Sheryl Sandberg, BTW, is the COO of Facebook. Randomly.
[+] All told, that was a perfect movie. The end. :D
