20 Days of My Damon and Elena Playlist...Day 2
"Timing is Everything" by Garrett Hedlund
This song is from the Country Strong Soundtrack. I was listening to it a lot back in 2011, and one stanza in particular inspired a fanfic, one that is still high up on my favorites list.
The stanza is this:

The fic got named Healed By the Same and is a proud moment in my writing career, mostly because it didn't go at all the way I planned.

This is the song playing in 2x08 when Damon tells Elena that he loves her for the first time and then promptly erases her memory. It's delicious on so many levels because this scene is all kinds of wrong--if you ship Damon and Elena, you probably have ~romantic feels while you watch it even though you know it's terrible for Damon to manipulate her mind the way he does. But to quote Ian Somerhalder himself, it's hard to be mad at Damon when he does everything with so much heart. So that's why this song is so amazing, as it plays in the background over and under his *big speech.*

There's so much that Damon is "wrong" about -- he's come back to the scene of the crime for the first time (killing Jeremy was wrong, and he has apologized at this point, but seriously, can one ever really repent of that? No, obviously, and Damon knows that), and he's saying trite shit like "I don't deserve you, but my brother does" because why? What has Stefan done that makes him worthy or more deserving of Elena's love than Damon? He stalked her, check. He lied to her repeatedly, check. He ate a migrant village, check. And above all, Damon's taking her choice away from her, a repeated theme with Damon, but in this case, it really is selfish because it's not to keep Elena alive, it's to unburden his own heart. But then he takes it away so it doesn't "count." He's just wrong, wrong, wrong. And ugh, it still makes me ache, three years later, it just hurts so good.

THIS SONG. Ugh. I mean, I cannot even...it's just a hella sexy song, and Damon and Elena are a hella sexy couple, and I don't know how you could hear it and not think of them. I can't even just pick a couple lines from it to illustrate, it's just top to bottom, front to back, ALL DELENA.
