So, many of you sat with me through the threats I made all through S4 of this show. I wasn't going to endure another Bones-like will they or won't they, and I thought if these writers really were very clever at all, they would be able to come up with scenarios in which Rick and Kate could be a couple and still be interesting.
May I introduce you to Castle S5, which has been, hands down for me, the best season EVAH of this show. Clever doesn't cover it; cute and romantic, funny and poignant, touching and excruciating all at once, never, never, never have Rick and Kate been MORE interesting than they've been this season as they've navigated their attraction into love into ... well, what? That's the 64,000 question!
And the culmination of last night's finale just worked on SO MANY LEVELS. Kate loves Rick, she does, and she loves what they do together. I thought it was so perfect how they gave Stana all the reaction shots to Nathan's Castle-ness, and her moment of regret thinking of them not figuring things out together anymore--she wants to grow, she wants to progress, not just in her job, or her relationship, but in her life. She wants what everyone with a brain wants: she wants evolution. Letting go and loving Rick gave her something she hasn't had, ever in her adult life: the ability to MOVE ON. She was in a rut over what happened to her mother, understandably, and now, now she's finally able to let it go--or at least not let it control everything. And that prepared her to see opportunities and have a desire to do something else, go somewhere else.
And if Rick is really offering what he's seems to be offering--commitment for better, for worse, then he should be willing to go wherever she needs to go. I can't wait to see what this will do to them, and how they will still struggle with their various issues, because for all that she has let him in, and they have journeyed together, there is still so much not discovered yet. And Castle has his own issues, and a Spy Daddy who is inevitably going to come back into his life, and I just really, really, really hope that S6 can build upon everything that was absolute perfect about S5.
There is something to be said, going into a sixth season, if the viewers are still excited and intrigued, and I for one am. I got bored/irritated/offended with The Mentalist and Burn Notice and Bones, but Castle has paced things just right, at least for me, to be invested, totally.
And every show there will be little Ryan/Espo moments, like where they're discussing whether or not Beckett's pregnant and Espo is just like, "I can't even talk to you about this," and I remember why every part of it is just dear to my heart. Thanks for the good times, show. You are excellent! And I should mention, the flashback episode from a couple weeks ago was PERFECTION. The edits, the clips they chose, the naughtiness. Ugh. Oh, and Nathan Fillion, please do my health program and get fit again, I miss you from when you just a tad thinner!
