Is there any D/E fan that doesn't have this in their playlist? I mean, COME ON. The show used it. It's the most perfect song in the whole world. [crowandfog picked this as her only song for them, and if I were forcing myself to choose, this would certainly be it for me, as well.]

The first time I heard this, I thought more of Damon, of course, but the truth is, Elena can't let go either. She never will. She might go to her grave loving two Salvatores, but do not doubt, she loves BOTH.

Because Damon and Elena mirror each other so much and so often, this is so evocative to me of their emotions. It's a metaphor, but it's also very real, now that Elena is a vampire.

I simply adore this song (thanks to traciaknows for bringing it to my attention last year) and think it plays so well into the inherent understanding that only deepens the longer they know each other. And they understand each other because they've experienced (and internalized) their pain in similar ways.
