First of all, he's a fictional character. Let's be clear that I understand the difference between fact and fiction. HE'S NOT REAL, Y'ALL. That's what makes him interesting: he exists in a realm different than my ordinary life.

And he was. So, so, so beautiful. And I remember when he sang on that show, I was beside myself with fangirl lust.
Oh. Those were the days. Anyway...excuse my series of flashbacks there.
I think Damon and Stefan have very co-dependent aspects to their relationship, and that through the years it's been easier for Stefan to disassociate. In this one instance I sort of have sympathy for him--*gasp*--because how else could he live with himself? He did a bad, bad thing and it created a monster, and he knows he deserves that monster haunting his life. But it's telling that they haven't ever killed each other. They do love one another, and Damon can't ever stop being the big bro. No matter what, he will always take care of Stefan. Unless he just kills him one day. ;-)
