It started as an ordinary day at work. He was cleaning off one of the tables in the food court, face tilted down so he can make absolute sure they're clean, when his ears picked up talking from a group of girls near by gossiping. Normally he doesn't pay attention to them, but then he heard them mention Souji.
"I was thinking of giving chocolates to Souji-kun on Valentine's Day." One of the girls swooned. "He's so handsome and smart...and really nice from what I hear. The perfect guy!"
"Yeah, you and every other girl agree on that." One of the others snickers. "But he's with Amagi and Kujikawa a lot. Not to mention Ebihara. What chance do girls like us have against them?"
"How about Kou-kun?" a third girl piped up. "He's pretty much the same. Maybe not as smart as Souji-kun, but still not too bad."
"I heard he likes Satonaka, though." The first girl sighes. "Which pretty much blows away any chance we have."
"Damn! Why are all the good guys always taken!?" The third girl exclaimed. "I was thinking about Naoto-kun, but she's a girl. And I heard that she and Kanji-kun are together a lot."
"Wonder what she sees in a foul-mouthed delinquent like him." Girl two mutters. "Seriously, the guy's got no looks or brains and is probably going to grow up to be a wife-beater."
"Well...that's not entirely true..." the first girl ventures. "You know about those dolls sold at Tatsumi Textiles? He makes them."
"Get out!" Girl three laughs. "No way a punk like him could make them!"
"Its true!" Girl one insists. "I asked his mom and she said he made them while he was there. And from the look on his face, I'd say it was true! Besides, he's not too bad if you're into tough-guys with a soft spot."
"Speaking of which, Daisuke-kun isn't too bad." Girl three comments. "Sure his head is made of stone, but he's not too bad-looking and is pretty nice."
"He's kinda shy around girls, though." Girl two points out. "Though he's getting over it a little."
"Naoki-kun is kinda shy too, isn't he?" Girl one asks.
"Yeah, he is." Girl two agrees. "But he's also a bit cold, too."
"I heard him laughing once." Girl three brings up. "He has a nice sense of humor. Plus, he's really polite."
The girls continued chatting about different guys. Yosuke stopped listening after awhile and just continued cleaning. But his attention turned back to the girls when Girl one mentioned him.
"What about Yosuke-kun?"
Both of her friends laughed.

Yosuke froze and bit his lip as she continued.
"He's cheerful all the time in an annoying way, desperate to get attention, and clings onto the people who are stupid enough to spend a MINUTE with him! And he's so full of himself; like being the son of a store manager is something to brag about!" the girl snorts.
And then came the crushing blow.
"Even a girl who's desperate won't want to go near him."
At times like these, Yosuke really wished he had his headphones. That way, he could've blocked out the words with blaring music. But they were left with his uniform jacket, out of reach.
His eyes stung as tears began to form. Not wanting anyone to see his distress, he headed for the nearest bathroom stall to compose himself.
While Yosuke knew he wasn't the most popular boy in school like Souji or Kou, he knew he had redeeming qualities like what Kanji or Daisuke had. But the way that girl talked, he may as well have been lacking them.
"D-Dammit..." he croaked, tears streaming from his eyes. He faced Shadows, for Pete's sake! He endured the girl he liked calling him a pain in the ass and he faced himself. What that girl said shouldn't have hurt him.
But it did.
The door to the bathroom opened and slow, cautious footsteps approached his stall. "Yosuke?" Souji's voice asked. "Are you alright?"
Yosuke gulped and resisted sniffing. "Yeah, I'm fine." he replied shakily. "I forgot to use the bathroom before my shift. My bladder nearly exploded." He didn't expect Souji to believe him. Not when his best friend saw the worst of him.
But instead, Souji just said "Alright. When does your shift end? Nanako and I are looking for ingredients for Valentine's Day chocolates, and we could use someone to help and talk with."
Valentine's Day...those girls were talking about who they would give theirs to. Yosuke gulped again. "I'm gonna be working late, Partner. Sorry, but I don't think I'll be able to help you out."
"That's fine. I'll see you at school tomorrow." The sound of footsteps told him that Souji left the bathroom. Which was fine by Yosuke.
Right now, he really wanted to be alone.

The girls had different ways of giving chocolates to their chosen boy. Some would slip the chocolates into the recipient's shoe locker while others were bolder and gave theirs in person. There were others who opted to give theirs when school let out and no one else would see.
Whatever the case was, it was hard to conceal how much someone had.
"Dude, I can't even see the surface of your desk anymore." Yosuke joked. Souji, who was trying unsuccessfully to find a place to store the chocolate, had a large pile of chocolates on his desk. Most were handmade.
"I'm running out of space to keep them." Souji muttered impassively. He was careful with the chocolates, but not with the same reverance other boys stored their chocolates; especially the ones from girls they liked. While the silver-haired teen was courteous, he didn't show any sign of affection for the girls who had gifted him.
On the other hand, Yosuke's desk had a small pile of cheap sympathy chocolates and a few from the girls as friends. The words from those girls days ago echoed freashly in his mind.
"Even a girl who's desperate won't go near him."
The memory worsened his mood. "Hope this day goes by quick." Yosuke muttered as he stashed away the pile on his desk.
A note was buried underneath.
Curious, he opened the note:
Meet me at the Samegawa at 14:30.
He recognized the handwriting immediately as Souji's. But what did he want?

After school, Yosuke paced by the river. He had come early and was now severely regretting it. "Just what does he want?" He kept thinking.
"...do you stay with him?"
That voice...it was Girl Two.
She was walking beside Souji, chatting casually with him. Yosuke's insides twisted up inside. Was this the reason Souji brought him here?
"What do you mean?" Souji asked.
"There's no reason for you to hang around Hanamura." Girl two said. "I can't really understand why you hang around someone as annoying as him. Why haven't you ditched him?"
Yosuke began reaching for his headphones.
"You're right-you don't understand."
Yosuke froze.
Souji glared at the girl, his eyes cold. "While most of what you said about him three days ago was true, you don't know everything about him. Yosuke may be annoying sometimes, but he is a great guy I can't imagine going on living without meeting him." The glare became colder. "And despite the way certain people treat him, he still manages to be polite to them. So if you have anything more to say about my best friend, I may not be the same as him."
The brunette slowly lowered his hands from his headphones.
Girl two snorted. "The way you're talking about him, you may as well be dating." She was probably saying it to fluster Souji; to get him to deny it by agreeing with her.
Instead, he smiled. "I wish we were." he replied.
The look in his gray eyes said his words were genuine.

Souji shrugged. "Do what you want, but I'm known to be the opposite." he commented. "Anyways, the people who really matter to me are the ones who don't care about that."
Girl two looked like she was going to say something, but instead stormed off.
Souji turned and spotted Yosuke standing by the river lookin up at him with surprise. He let out a small chuckle. "I take it you heard everything."
"You...you mean you..." Yosuke had a hard time getting the words out.
Souji just nodded, then pulled out a tiny box. "Here; I'm not that great at making chocolates, but I managed to get one right. It may be a bit crunchy, though." He handed it to his speechless friend. "Take your time. If you don't feel the same, let me know. And even though I don't want to cut this meeting short, I have work at the daycare soon. See you tomorrow."
Yosuke watched him walk off, something odd forming in his chest and heat rising into his cheeks.
~~
The chocolate wasn't too bad. But Souji was right about it being crunchy and it left a taste in his mouth. Not that it was a bad thing; Yosuke actually liked it.
His face had cooled down by now, and it was time for him to head home.
"Yosuke-ni!" at the sound of his name, he turned and found Nanako running up to him. "Did big bro get his chocolate to you?"
"Yeah, it was alright."
"Oh, good!" Nanako smiled. "Dad was confused when he saw big bro trying to make chocolates since it was Valentine's day. But he said it was for someone special. Then he kept messing them up. He was really happy when one came out right even if it was a little burnt..."
Yosuke listened to Nanako chatter on, the heat in his cheeks returning. "He...did all that...for me?"
"Oh! I got to get going before it gets late! See you later!" Nanako waved before running off again.
Yosuke waved back before he continued home as well. The chocolate after taste in his mouth seemed sweeter than before.
He hoped it wouldn't go away until evening.
